Yu Tian bids goodbye to singing
Channel NewsAsia - Monday, December 15
After 40 years in the entertainment industry, Taiwanese artiste Yu Tian is saying goodbye to the music industry for the time being with a concert in Singapore. What are his plans after this? He reveals after much persistent inquiries.
Q: You are in town for the concert this time round and it is a goodbye concert. What makes you decide to end your music career now?
Yu: I've been in this industry for over forty years and I'm quite old now. In addition to that, I have other careers to handle. Having performed for so many years, I think it should come to an end now.
Q: How will you mark this end such that everyone will remember you as a singer?
Yu: This is my first concert in Singapore and it is tied up with a charity organization. My whole family will be here; my wife and my three children. I don't have to look for any other special guests; my children will be my guests.
Q: Since you are just putting aside the singing career for the moment, when will you return? Is there a time schedule?
Yu: Not at the moment. Singers of my generation are not used to the pop songs sung by the young singers; so I'm making use of this opportunity to take a break. Actually I am spending most of my time in Taiwan hosting variety shows. But I guess public servants of my age are all preparing for retirement.
Q: You've been hosting, acting, singing and now even involved in the politics. You sound omnipotent; equally adept in every single thing.
Q: Yes I'm currently involved in politics. Many people may be curious: What is Yu Tian doing in the political arena? I've set up the Taiwan Entertainment Union. Most audience think artistes earn a lot of money. But the fact is that, for those of low popularity, many of them are old and quite low on their finances as well; they lead miserable lives, but nobody knows how to help them.
Q: So how are you helping them?
Yu: Fight for their intellectual property rights, which include the lyrics and melodies. We want to fight for copyrights for the lyricists, composers and singers, and also the welfare of actors; they film for long hours, from day to night, continuously for few days and nights. It's really tiring but nobody is showing any concern or doing anything to improve the situation.
Q: And after leaving the music industry, which area of work will you spend more time on? Besides the Union you've set up, are there any other plans?
Yu: I'm now at this stage of life whereby I will just do my best to complete whatever work I have on hand. I will not bother too much about other stuff; the priority is on my current job. I will do my best in it.
Q: And what is it that you are currently working on?
Yu: That's the politics, legislative work.
Q: All these while, your family has been portrayed as blissful and warm. How do you manage that?
Yu: My family is very open, especially with my children. If they have any comments, they can voice out openly with us.
Q: You have been through ups and downs with your wife Li Ya Ping all these years. Are there any secrets to communication that you can share with us?
Yu: There are many temptations hidden in the entertainment industry. After you have set up a family, you have to cast away all these temptations. Because I've been in the industry for so long, everyone calls me a "Da Ge" (big brother); so even if there are temptations, I will have to hold back.
It is absolutely impossible for a couple not to quarrel. There will definitely be disagreements. Most of the times if she nags or is angry, I will just pretend not to hear it.
