S’pore, Gulf states sign FTA, recognise MUIS Halal certification
Channel NewsAsia - 2 hours 32 minutes ago
DOHA, Qatar : Three countries under the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) — namely Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates — have agreed to recognise the MUIS Halal Certification and Halal Mark as equivalent to those in their countries.
This will enable Muslim—compliant food products, certified by Singapore’s Islamic Religious Council (MUIS), entry into the Gulf markets. It will also provide greater assurance to Gulf visitors that their dietary requirements will be met when they visit Singapore.
The move follows the signing of a free trade agreement (FTA) between Singapore and GCC on Monday by Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who is on official visit to Qatar, and his GCC counterparts — President—in—Office of the GCC Ministerial Council and Qatar Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad Jassim Al—Thani and GCC Secretary—General Abdurrahman Hamad Al—Attiyah.
The FTA will grant tariff—free access for about 99 per cent of Singapore’s domestic exports worth some US$3.1 billion in 2007.
MUIS said the recognition of its Halal Certification and Halal Mark augurs well for Singapore’s position as a vital food hub. It will help further boost trade between Singapore and the GCC countries, and also contribute towards the harmonisation of international Halal standards.
MUIS added that the recognition will also attract more Muslim visitors and tourists from Asia, Middle East and beyond to Singapore.
Aside from the three GCC countries who are immediately recognising Singapore’s Halal certification, the remaining three — Oman, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain — are in the process of discussions.
As part of his visit to Qatar, Mr Lee met several leaders including the Amir Sheikh Hamad Khalifa Al—Thani and the Qatari Prime Minister, Sheikh Hamad Jassim Jabr Al—Thani.
Mr Lee also visited the newly opened Museum of Islamic Arts in Doha. — CNA /ls
