Vivian Chow ends 19 years relationship with Joe Nieh
Channel NewsAsia - Monday, December 15
Hong Kong artiste Vivian Chow sent a release through her manager Ambrose on Dec 11 announcing her breakup with boyfriend of 19 years, Joe Nieh, and they are now "just friends".
Nieh was caught red-handed for his intimate acts with a young hot lady at a nightspot by paparazzi. The photos were exposed on tabloids on Dec 7, putting his relationship with Chow on the rocks. In her release, Chow says she has forgiven Nieh for his frivolous acts.
In her release, Chow recounts the rollercoaster ride she had been through with Nieh, but also expresses the pressure of being in a relationship constantly bared to the eyes of the public. She knew of Nieh's frivolous habits since she accepted Nieh 19 years ago and that the relationship will be a revolutionary one; so she is not disappointed.
"Being just friends, we can enjoy the days when we do not have to be judged, and can start life afresh individually. Despite the change in status, I believe we still love each other," she adds, "I do not regret going through the years we had together; those days are engraved in my memory. I have no regrets and will continue life just like before."
Soon after Chow, Nieh also sent out a media release. He wrote:
"My scandal has created a sensation and become the talk of town. People have been discussing how I failed as a boyfriend. I truly appreciate these comments and criticisms. After a week of introspection, I am now apologizing once again to Vivian for my misdoing. I would also like to thank her again for her kind tolerance.
"When a relationship develops from a two-person affair to a public affair, the nature of the relationship would have changed. The sun may shine again after the rain, but a storm will come again. I've realized my mistake is not a 'technical negligence' like some of my friends have described; but a major mid life crisis. I will face up to the problem and improve myself; I do not rule out seeking professional help. I understand that I am no long the perfect boyfriend in people's eyes and I am unfit to be Vivian's boyfriend. To ease the public and express my regret and responsibility, I acknowledge my mistake and I choose to end the relationship with Vivian; but we will still be friends. This is undeniably a great loss, but I believe the media and her fans will welcome my decision. I may no longer be a competent boyfriend, but I have the confidence of being a competent friend.
"I have known Vivian for nearly 20 years, we've always shown mutual support and understanding. Today we are separated because of my inappropriate behavior, but it will not affect our friendship, joint routines and caring for our cat. I have admitting my mistake and seek Vivian's forgiving. The break up is like a death penalty to me.
"This will be the last time we are commenting on our past. I hope everyone will respect our friendship and not put any more standards on us. Should there by any changes to our current status, we will let the media have first hand information.
"I have moved out from our apartment in Happy Valley. I thank Vivian once again for the years of tolerance and the media's castigation. I hope the matter will come to an end here.
Joe Nieh, 11 December 2008"
Both releases seem to reveal a glimmer of hope for the "friends" to get back together.
