CHICAGO (AFP) - – Republican and Democratic hopefuls will duke it out in a primary election Tuesday for the chance to win a potent symbolic prize: President Barack Obama's former US Senate seat. Obama's home state of Illinois is holding this year's first primary, where the party faithful make their picks for November's mid-term elections. That contest is expected to be shaped by forces -- a sour economy, an anti-incumbent mood and doubts about Obama among independent voters -- that spell trouble for Democrats. And Republicans hoping to harness voter anger and ride to victory in November could deal a devastating blow to their rivals should they capture Obama's coveted seat. In a normal election year, Republicans would have slim chances of winning in the Democrat-leaning midwestern state where Obama romped to a 62-38 percent victory in his 2008 rout of Republican White House rival John McCain. "The Democrats should be in a position, here in Illinois, where they survive a national trend going towards the Republican party," said DePaul University political science professor Michael Mezey. But they lack a heavyweight candidate for the seat and must escape the "taint" of corruption, Mezey said in a telephone interview. Republicans hope to gain extra traction from voter frustration with a slew of scandals amid top local Democratic leaders -- most notably the indictment on corruption charges of former Democratic governor Rod Blagojevich, who stands accused of trying to auction off Obama's seat to the highest bidder. Blagojevich was removed from office shortly after appointing Roland Burris, who opted not to run for reelection as a result of the controversy. Blagojevich's trial is expected to begin this summer in a circus show that will provide Republicans with ample fodder for negative campaign ads. The governor's office is another coveted post up for grabs in November. "What everybody knows is 2010 is a really good year for Republicans," Representative Mark Kirk, a moderate who seems all but certain to be the party's champion in the closely watched senate joust, told AFP. Analysts caution that the nine-month stretch before the vote is an eternity in US politics, while recent polls show Kirk trailing his leading Democratic rival, banking scion and state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, who has run as an outsider. Kirk "has been steeped in (Washington) politics," and backed Republican president George W. Bush's "dangerous, reckless economic policies," Giannoulias said. His edge over Democratic rivals for the party's spot on the November ballot has ebbed recently, as his family's struggling bank, where he used to be chief loan officer, has drawn increased scrutiny from regulators. Kirk meanwhile has escaped one of the headaches for Republicans: a vocal conservative insurrection against the party's moderates, sometimes derisively dubbed "Republican In Name Only" (RINO), that threatens to split votes. While Kirk has been subjected to nasty attack ads calling him a "de facto pedophile" and closet homosexual, his opponent has found little support. A backer of abortion rights and gun control, Kirk is "the type of Republican who's won before in Illinois," Mezey said. But his decade in the House of Representatives could be a liability among voters with a "throw the bums out" anti-incumbent mentality, the professor cautioned. Democrats will also be defending Senate seats previously held by Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Since 1900, Senate seats vacated by someone elected to president or vice president have switched parties five out of 10 times.
