Feng Zhenghu has been camped out at Narita airport since early November in a case supporters have likened to the man in Steven Spielberg's movie "Terminal", after China repeatedly blocked him from going home. The 55-year-old says he has been given the green light to return to Shanghai and will go back before Chinese New Year on February 14, but he remained defiant. "Of course I'll continue my human rights activism," Feng told reporters at Narita, where he has lived on a bench near the immigration exit counter and survived mostly on instant noodles given to him by supporters. "Pro-democracy and human rights activism are part of my life, so I'll continue it," he said at a press conference he called at the airport, stressing that his work is legal under the Chinese constitution. Feng said officials from the Chinese embassy in Japan had visited him three times during the past week and told him he could return to China. "They said I can go home... so I decided to go home before February 14, the Chinese New Year," he said. "There are no conditions attached to that. They didn't set any conditions and I didn't offer any. "It's my right as a Chinese citizen to return to my home country." London-based human rights group Amnesty International lists Feng as a prominent activist who has been jailed in the past. Feng has said he has been denied re-entry to communist China eight times since June and was most recently forced to return to Japan by Chinese authorities at Shanghai airport on November 3. He now says he plans to visit his sister and friends in Japan for a few days from Wednesday before flying back to China. While at the airport, Feng has communicated with the outside world through his Chinese-language Twitter microblog and by phone, and overseas supporters have sent him food and supplies via a "Tokyo Airlift" campaign. The @fzhenghu Twitter page has more than 14,000 followers. His case mirrors that of the character played by Tom Hanks in Spielberg's 2004 film who is trapped in New York's JFK airport when he is denied entry to the United States but cannot return home because a revolution there has invalidated his passport.
