"Eclipse" enjoys record Wednesday at box offices
LOS ANGELES - "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" enjoyed a record-setting Wednesday opening by making $68.5 million in theaters, but it fell short of the first-day gross for the previous movie in the vampire romance franchise. Box office figures released on Thursday show that the $68.5 million "Eclipse" earned in 4,416 U.S. and Canadian theaters beat the record set last year by "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," when it opened on a Wednesday with $62 million.
A Minute With: Dev Patel from "Slumdog" to "Airbender"
NEW YORK - British actor Dev Patel had a dream start to his film career digging into his Indian heritage to play the lead role in British director Danny Boyle's Oscar-winning "Slumdog Millionaire." His second film, M. Night Shyamalan's "The Last Airbender," is being panned by the critics, but Patel's performance as an a vengeful fire-spewing prince has earned some of the film's only praise on the eve of its U.S. release on Friday.
London lauds Domingo in "Simon Boccanegra"
LONDON - He is 69 years old and underwent cancer surgery this year, but Spanish singer Placido Domingo still has what it takes when it comes to commanding the opera stage, British critics said on Thursday. The artist best known as a tenor was singing baritone in Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra" at the Royal Opera House, the same part he performed at Milan's La Scala in April -- his comeback after surgery to remove a malignant polyp from his colon.
Kylie Minogue, sexy as ever on "Aphrodite"
NEW YORK - Pop star Kylie Minogue has cultivated international success spanning two decades with her sultry image and catchy, tinny pop songs that blossomed into mainstream dance music beats. The London-based, Australian singer is still selling her dance-floor hits and sexy formula with her new album "Aphrodite," being released globally on July 6.
Meryl Streep in talks to play Margaret Thatcher
LOS ANGELES - Meryl Streep is in talks to reteam with her "Mamma Mia!" director Phyllida Lloyd for "The Iron Lady" a biopic of controversial and long-governing former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher Jim Broadbent is in talks to play Thatcher's husband, Denis, for the film which is being co-produced and co-financed by Pathe and Film 4.
"Scream 4" brings on more fresh blood
LOS ANGELES - Adam Brody, Marley Shelton and Erik Knudsen have joined the cast of "Scream 4," which began shooting this week in Michigan. The film reunites director Wes Craven with Kevin Williamson, who kicked off a horror movie revival with his "Scream" script in 1996.
CNN mainstay Larry King quitting after 25 years
LOS ANGELES - Larry King, the CNN personality known for his nonconfrontational interviews, colorful suspenders and complicated personal life, said on Tuesday he would end his talk show in the fall after a 25-year reign as a key promotional stop for the rich and famous. King, 76, said he wanted to spend more time with his family. His seventh wife reportedly attempted suicide earlier this month after the couple said in April they would divorce.
Al Pacino mesmerizes in "Merchant of Venice"
NEW YORK - Al Pacino famously spends years obsessing on the Shakespearean roles he takes on, but the results pay off. Such is the case with his Shylock in the Central Park production of the Bard's still-controversial "The Merchant of Venice." Although his performance in the 2004 film often came across as mannered, his current stage rendition, while still possessing self-conscious qualities, is undeniably mesmerizing. Humanizing the character by bringing his pain and anguish to the fore, Pacino is the standout of director Daniel Sullivan's intelligent and thoughtful revival, which naturally has sparked a ticket frenzy for its limited summer run and talks about a possible Broadway transfer.
U.S. authorities seize websites over pirated movies
LOS ANGELES - U.S. authorities seized nine websites on Wednesday, accusing them of movie piracy by offering free access to movies such as "Toy Story 3". Kevin Suh, vice president of content protection for the Motion Picture Association of America, a Hollywood trade group, called the action, "Operation In Our Sites", the "largest takedown of illegal movie and television websites in a single action by the federal government."
Wonder Woman gets 21st century makeover
LOS ANGELES - Comic book superheroine Wonder Woman has traded in her spangled hot pants for urban leggings and upped her street smarts in a 21st century make-over for the 69 year-old character. J.Michael Straczynski, the new writer for the DC Comics series, told the New York Times he wanted to "toughen her up and give her a modern sensibility" and change the outfit Wonder Woman has been wearing for almost seven decades.
