Apple launched the iPhone 4 last week to a huge groundswell of demand. But the launch was also plagued by complaints from some customers about poor call reception on the device when they held it in a certain way. Amazon again cuts Kindle price as iPad raises heat NEW YORK - Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> cut the price on its most expensive Kindle electronic reader, the latest salvo in a price war in response to Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> pricier iPad tablet computer. It was the second price cut for the online retailer's line of e-book readers in as many weeks. Last week, Amazon cut the price of its cheaper Kindle with a 6-inch screen to $189, hours after bookstore chain Barnes & Noble Inc <BKS.N> lowered the price of its "Nook" e-reader to $199. Both had cost $259. Microsoft pulls plug on Kin phones SAN FRANCISCO - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> has pulled the plug on a new generation of smartphones less than three months after unveiling the devices that were part of its efforts to catch-up with Apple Inc <AAPL.O> and Google Inc <GOOG.O> in the fast-growing mobile market. U.S. government slowly adopting Web-based computing WASHINGTON - The United States, seeking to modernize technology and reduce costs, is embracing "cloud computing," but privacy and security issues need to be ironed out during a decade-long transition, U.S. officials said on Thursday. In a fledgling and rapidly growing industry, companies like Google Inc <GOOG.O>, Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> and Salesforce.com Inc <CRM.N>, the world's biggest maker of Web-based software, are trying to move rapidly to provide cloud computing services -- where data is stored on remote servers -- to corporations and the U.S. government, which spends about $80 billion each year on technology. Sony: 535,000 Vaio PCs may have overheating glitch TOKYO - Japan's Sony Corp said on Wednesday that about 535,000 units of its "Vaio" brand personal computers globally may be in danger of overheating and that it has provided software on its website to eliminate the problem. Sony <6758.T> said in a statement that there have been 39 overheating cases in total, all reported outside Japan. Some of these have resulted in damage to computer bodies, but no burn injuries have been reported. China says has no comment on Google rerouting move BEIJING - China's foreign ministry said on Thursday it had no comment on Google's decision to end automatic rerouting of users to its uncensored Hong Kong search portal, but that all Internet operators had to abide by local laws. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Qin Gang referred questions about Google to "relevant agencies," adding only that "Internet operators in China should abide by Chinese laws and regulations." Cold War support for Russian "spies" on networking site MOSCOW - Patriotic, anti-American messages adorn the pages of two alleged Russian spies on Russia's answer to Facebook, a reminder of historic suspicions and resentments that have survived the end of the Cold War. "Russia will never abandon you!" is the repeated message on the pages of Mikhail Semenko and Anna Chapman, arrested in the United States on suspicion of being part of a Russian spy ring. Over 100 people left similar messages of support on the Russian language social netowrking site odnoklassniki.ru on Wednesday. Google AdWords lacks transparency: French regulator BRUSSELS - France's antitrust regulator accused Google Inc of a lack of transparency over its keyword advertising service and ordered it to clarify conditions for the product within four months. The Autorite de la Concurrence was responding on Wednesday to a complaint filed in February by French GPS and smartphone data services company Navx, which alleged the world's top search engine had abused its dominant position by scrapping Navx's AdWords contract. Foxconn warns of increased H1 losses HONG KONG - Electronics maker Foxconn International warned late on Tuesday that it expected its first-half losses to increase from the same period a year ago due to weaker pricing and higher depreciation expenses. The warning comes at a time when Foxconn <2038.HK> and its parent company, Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. <2317.TW>, are struggling with a wave of labor unrest in China's southeastern industrial hub, where increasingly assertive migrant workers are demanding better conditions and higher wages. IBM buys stake in China's Bright Oceans SHANGHAI , according to a statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.
