Afghan attacks kill three
AFP - 2 hours 55 minutes ago
KHOST, Afghanistan (AFP) - - Bomb blasts killed two policemen and a teenager in Afghanistan on Monday, and wounded nearly 20 other people in fresh attacks linked to an extremist insurgency.
A suicide attacker blew up a car packed with explosives near a US base for NATO's International Security Assistance Force in the eastern town of Khost, Afghan and US officials said.
A 15-year-old boy was killed in the blast, said doctor Abdul Majeed from the town's main hospital. ISAF said five children were among 12 Afghans treated for injuries.
The blast was similar to scores of others waged by extremists linked to the insurgent Taliban movement, which was in government between 1996 and 2001 until the US-led invasion toppled the group from power.
A second suicide bomber had apparently planned to blow himself up in the crowd that gathered after the first blast, but detonated his explosives without causing casualties, the interior ministry said.
A policeman and civilian were also wounded when militants remotely detonated a roadside bomb next to a passing police vehicle in Khost, provincial police chief Abdul Qayoom Bakizoy told AFP.
The town, close to the border with Pakistan, has been battered by regular attacks in recent months, including a suicide car bombing on December 28 near a government office that killed 14 children and two Afghan adults.
Elsewhere, a deadly roadside bomb exploded under a police vehicle in the southern Helmand province on Monday, a local official said.
"Two policemen were killed and another four civilians were wounded in the blast," provincial spokesman Mohammad Daud Ahmadi told AFP.
Last year was the deadliest in Afghanistan's current insurgency, fuelling calls for a re-think in Western-led efforts to help the country fight the flood of violence and recover from decades of war.
About 30,000 fresh US troops are expected to deploy to Afghanistan this year to boost its defences and Barack Obama, due to be sworn in as US president on Tuesday, has vowed to step up efforts to help the impoverished country.
