More than 260 missing in Indonesian ferry disaster
AFP - 28 minutes ago
MAKASSAR, Indonesia (AFP) - - More than 260 people are missing after an Indonesian ferry sank in heavy seas off Sulawesi island early Sunday, an official said.
The maritime official said the ferry was about 50 kilometres (30 miles) off Majene, western Sulawesi, when authorities lost contact with it around 2:00 am (1800 GMT Saturday).
"A ferry with more than 250 people on board, plus 17 crew and one captain, sank with four crew surviving. Search and rescue teams have been sent to the area," said the official in Majene.
It was not immediately clear if authorities expected to find more survivors.
The ferry was travelling from Pare Pare in South Sulawesi to Samarinda in East Kalimantan when it went down, the official said.
