Japanese prime minister arrives in Seoul
AFP - Sunday, January 11
SEOUL (AFP) - - Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso has arrived in South Korea for a visit aimed at boosting economic cooperation, with Afghanistan and North Korea also high on agenda.
Making his first visit to Seoul as premier, Aso is being accompanied by a delegation of business leaders as the two neighbours seek to build a new relationship following years of frosty ties.
Leaders from the two countries hold summits every year, but the exchanges have often been overshadowed by territorial or historical disputes related to Japan's 1910-45 occupation of South Korea.
A long-running territorial row flared up again shortly before Aso's visit over Japan's claim to four uninhabited islands in the Sea of Japan (East Sea).
But the two leaders were expected to sidestep the sensitive issue and instead focus on measures to tackle the global economic crisis.
