Ukraine signs Russian gas transit deal: Ukraine PM
AFP - 36 minutes ago
KIEV (AFP) - - Ukraine has signed an accord to allow the resumption of Russian gas supplies to Europe, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said Sunday.
"We signed the protocol today," Tymoshenko said after talks with Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek in the Ukrainian capital Kiev.
Topolanek said: "Ukraine has approved and accepted all conditions enabling Russia to supply gas.
"Nothing prevents the deployment of monitoring teams and renewal of gas transit," he added.
Russia suspended gas supplies to Europe through Ukraine last week, saying it was forced to do so because Kiev was illegally siphoning off the gas -- a charge vehemently denied by Ukraine.
The cutoff has disrupted supplies across Europe, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without heating amid bitterly cold winter weather.
Russia said it would only resume supplies once Ukraine signed the deal enabling teams of monitors to verify that Russian gas was transiting through Ukraine to European customers.
