Singapore sentences TV reporter to 10 months jail
By ALEX KENNEDY,Associated Press Writer AP - 2 hours 41 minutes ago
SINGAPORE - A court in Singapore sentenced Australian TV reporter Peter Lloyd on Tuesday to 10 months in jail for consumption and possession of methamphetamine.
Judge Hamidah Ibrahim handed Lloyd to two eight-month terms for convictions on consumption and possession, to be served concurrently. Ibrahim also added a two-month term for possession of a drug utensil.
Lloyd, 41, pleaded guilty to the three charges after the government dropped drug trafficking counts. Lloyd, the New Delhi-based South Asia correspondent for the Australian Broadcasting Corp., could have been sentenced to 10 years in jail, a fine, or both for drug consumption.
Wearing a gray suit and a white shirt, Lloyd was handcuffed and led away by police after sentencing. Lloyd's lawyer, Hamidul Haq, declined to comment to reporters.
Haq told Ibrahim before the sentencing that Lloyd had used methamphetamine as a means of medicating symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, which Lloyd developed while covering events such as bombings in Bali and Pakistan.
Lloyd suffered from nightmares and depression, Haq said.
"In a dissociated state, he resorted to drugs," Haq said. "He was acting like a different person."
Prosecutor Natalie Morris rejected Haq's argument, saying Lloyd knew right from wrong.
"Though he may have been using drugs to cope with post-traumatic stress disorder, it is not a justification or good excuse," Morris said.
Lloyd was arrested in July after being caught by police with 0.01 ounce (0.28 gram) of methamphetamine.
The journalist has been the face of ABC's coverage from India and Pakistan, appearing regularly on the network's nationally broadcast daily news. Lloyd was in Singapore on leave when he was arrested by narcotics officers during an investigation of a man to whom Lloyd allegedly sold the drugs.
Singapore imposes severe penalties for drug use and possession, including a mandatory death penalty for anyone caught with more than half an ounce (15 grams) of heroin or more than 17 1/2 ounces (500 grams) of marijuana.
