New heart centre to handle 45% more outpatient cases by 2015
Channel NewsAsia - Wednesday, December 3
SINGAPORE: Heart disease is the second biggest killer in Singapore. By the year 2015, outpatient attendance for heart disease is projected to increase to 320,000 from 200,000 last year.
And to meet the needs of a growing number of heart patients here, there will be a second heart centre at the National University Hospital (NUH).
The new National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS) will focus on four core clinical programmes — heart attacks, heart failure, congenital heart disease and vascular medicine.
“Among the core clinical programmes, the area of heart failure is of particular importance. As our population ages, more and more patients are going to be down with this condition,” said the director of NUHCS, Tan Huay Cheem.
And S. Karunakaran is one such patient. The 71—year—old heart—bypass patient suffered a heart attack seven years ago, and has gone through three angioplasties to clear his blocked arteries. Last year, he had an open heart surgery.
He said: “There is a lot of pain involved. The recuperation part is not that simple. You have to have the (right) mind and the support of doctors and nurses. I am almost normal now, I don’t have any breathing problems. I can climb six stories.”
The new heart centre has doctors who can treat cardiac patients’ other ailments such as diabetes or kidney failure.
"It allows different staff members with related expertise to work closely together for the betterment of overall patient outcome," said the chief executive of the National University Health System, Benjamin Ong.
The new heart centre will be housed in the first and third levels of NUH’s current dental block.
The new frontage will be up within a year, with the entire movement of staff and patients taking place in stages. This will be done without disrupting the hospital’s current cardiac services.
The centre will help ease the patient load on the National Heart Centre at Outram Road.
NUH currently sees 55,000 outpatient heart cases and it expects the number to go up by 45 per cent by 2015. It will increase its present capacity of warded patients by close to 40 per cent within the next seven years.
