MFA reiterates advisory to postpone travel to Bangkok
Channel NewsAsia - 2 hours 43 minutes ago
SINGAPORE: Although there’re reports that the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok will re—open, Singapore’s Foreign Affairs Ministry stressed that Singaporeans should postpone non—essential travel to Bangkok.
It added that it’s continuing to work closely with Singapore carriers to mount additional flights to help Singaporeans stranded in Bangkok.
Singaporeans are leaving Bangkok by flights out of U—Tapao Airport near Pattaya, as well as Phuket and Chiang Mai.
The Singapore Embassy said it has contacted more than 600 stranded Singaporeans and assisted some 490 to leave Bangkok.
On Monday, the embassy arranged for a group of 72 Singaporeans to travel by land to Phuket so that they could take SilkAir and Tiger Airways flights on Tuesday. It has also arranged for a group of 50 Singaporeans travelling on Thai Airways to travel to Phuket by coach to catch a flight home.
Another group of Singaporeans will be leaving late Tuesday for Phuket.
With these latest departures, about 120 Singaporeans remain in Bangkok.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry said this figure includes those who have decided to remain for various reasons.
To assist the remaining stranded passengers, SIA’s two daily flights out of U—Tapao will continue until December 3 with a possible extension if there is demand.
SilkAir will also be mounting 13 additional flights between Singapore and Phuket between December 2 and 7.
It will also mount three additional flights to Chiang Mai.
Tiger Airways will also continue to mount additional flights from Phuket. —CNA/vm
