Suspected Filipino militants abduct 7 workers
AP - Tuesday, December 2
MANILA, Philippines - Suspected Muslim militants kidnapped seven workers in a southern Philippine province where rebel attacks have continued despite a government crackdown, officials said Tuesday.
The construction workers were returning to their office on a dump truck after hauling sand from a beach when they were stopped and led away by masked gunmen Monday near a farming village on Basilan island, marine Lt. Col. Leonard Vincent Teodoro said.
No group has claimed responsibility. A police search was under way, regional police chief Bensali Jabarani said.
The kidnappings may have been meant to divert the attention of the marines, who were conducting anti-crime and counterinsurgency operations in two nearby areas at the time of the abductions, Teodoro said.
Jabarani blamed the kidnappings on Muslim rebels belonging to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, a large group that has sporadically engaged the government in peace negotiations. Rebel spokesman Eid Kabalu denied his group was involved.
Teodoro said the identity of the kidnappers remained uncertain but they were likely from the front or the smaller, but more violent al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf group.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has expressed anger over a rise in kidnappings by Muslim militants in Basilan and nearby islands and ordered troops and police to step up a monthslong crackdown.
Although it has long been crippled by U.S.-backed military offensives, Abu Sayyaf continues to be a threat in predominantly Muslim Basilan, about 550 miles (880 kilometers) south of Manila.
