No crisis for prized Danish Christmas trees: growers
AFP - Wednesday, December 3
COPENHAGEN (AFP) - - Prized Nordmann Christmas trees that are exported around the world from Denmark each year are expected to sell well this holiday season despite the raging economic crisis, growers said on Tuesday.
"Demand from importers is as strong as in past years, and it's even stronger than what we can supply since there are fewer trees for sale," the head of the Danish Christmas tree growers' association, Kaj Oestergaard, told AFP.
Importers will pay on average 85 to 90 kroner (11 to 12 euros, 14 to 15 dollars) per tree, up 10 to 20 percent from 2007, he said.
"However, we don't know yet if retailers will pass on that increase to consumers in these times of crisis," Oestergaard said.
Last year, a two-meter (6.6-foot) Nordmann tree sold in Denmark for an average 350 kroner (47 euros, 59 dollars).
The Nordmann tree, a 10-year labour of love for producers who groom this classic, is revered for its elegant symmetry, its dense, emerald green branches and its soft, long-lasting needles.
Last year, there was a shortage of some 300,000 to 400,000 Nordmanns due to a drop in production, a fall that "is continuing in 2008 when we expect to produce about nine million trees, or 500,000 fewer than last year," Oestergaard said.
Claus Christensen, a senior consultant for the association, said overall sales were expected to be in line with last year when they hit 1.4 billion kroner (187 million euros, 238 million dollars), almost all of which came from exports.
But he stressed that the 3,500 to 4,000 growers would not pocket great sums.
"The average price of a Nordmann sold to retailers has stayed about the same over the past 10-year period while their costs have increased a lot," he said.
