Bangkok (ANN) - Looking at the burgeoning Indian market, Thai AirAsia, a sister company of AirAsia, Asia's biggest budget airline, has launched inaugural flights to New Delhi and Kolkata from Bangkok.

The maiden flights to New Delhi and Kolkata on December 1 (Wednesday) carried 163 and 35 passengers respectively.

The regular operation to these two destinations will officially start on December 14 and will operate four days a week, according to Thai AirAsia CEO Tassapon Bijleveld.

"Ever since the airline opened for bookings on October 12, there has been so much demand that we decided to offer more flights so people can conveniently fly between Bangkok and Delhi on any day of the week," Tassapon said, expecting a load factor of 85 per cent.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, around 600,000 people from Thailand visit India each year for tourism and recreational purposes and statictics from January to August 2010 have shown that there is a 20 per cent increase in number of visitors from India to Thailand.

Indian ambassador to Thailand Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty welcomed the new flights of AirAsia, saying this will greatly help facilitate more travel between the two countries.

Speaking during a press conference, the Indian ambassador said there is a huge demand in India to travel to Thailand but there is a shortage of flights. With the entry of Thai AirAsia, air traffic will be eased.

He added that there are many Indian companies operating in Thailand and the flights will definitely enable more investments to the country. He also assured that obtaining visa to India is streamlined and won't be difficult. The Indian embassy has tapped an outsourcing company to facilitate visas.

For its inaugural flights, Thai AirAsia's one way all-inclusive fares from Bangkok to Delhi start from 2,290 baht (US$76) while one-way fares from Bangkok to Kolkata start from 1,790 baht ($60).
