Forest fire inferno kills 40 in northern Israel

HAIFA, Israel (AFP) - – A huge forest fire swept northern Israel on Thursday, killing up to 40 people, many of them prison guards who were trapped in a bus trying to flee the flames, security officials said.
Officials said the blaze was the worst in the country's history, and they have put out an urgent call for international help to tackle it.
Police sources said at least 40 people had died in the blaze.
Israel's Magen David Adom ambulance service initially said around 40 people had been killed, but later said they could confirm the deaths only of 22 people, with the others regarded as "missing."
Police said the dead were prison guards who were on board a bus that was headed to evacuate prisoners from a Damon jail in the middle of the Carmel national park.
"All those who were killed were on board the bus. They were all prison guards," one source told AFP.
Police and medical sources confirmed that the Haifa police chief, who had been driving in a police car next to the bus, was critically injured, and another two policemen were still missing.
By nightfall, the fire had incinerated hundreds of hectares (acres) of land and was still raging out of control.
The fire service issued an urgent call for all of Israel's 1,500 firefighters to report to the area, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appealed for international help to control the blaze which broke out shortly before midday.
"Netanyahu spoke in the last few minutes with the heads of Greece, Cyprus, Italy and Russia with the aim of recruiting additional air fire fighters from these countries to help put out the fire in the Carmel," a statement from his office said.
"We are harnessing all the state's energies in order to deal with this disaster, to save the injured, stop the fire," Netanyahu said in a public address shortly before leaving for the scene of the tragedy. "This is a disaster on a scale we have not experienced before."
Dramatic footage from the scene showed flames rushing across the forest floor, engulfing trees and sending thick plumes of smoke into the air.
Firefighters wearing breathing equipment trained jets of water onto the blaze, as ash thrown into the air by the fire rained back down onto them.
An AFP photographer counted at least 20 charred bodies lying on orange stretchers at the side of a road, the clothes burnt off their bodies, only their boots intact.
Other footage showed the gutted remains of the bus, which one eyewitness said had been consumed by the flames.
"Anyone who's ever seen a fire storm will know. They could not survive it; they had no protection; they just fell to the road and burned alive," fireman Dudu Vanunu told Channel 2 television.
Police said they had evacuated Damon prison, which mainly houses Palestinian security prisoners, as well as the nearby Arab Israeli village of Ussafiya, as flames swept through the pine forest covering the Carmel hill ridge, one of Israel's most popular beauty spots.
Kibbutz Beit Oren and a luxury hotel nearby were also evacuated as the flames ripped through a huge swathe of land some 10 kilometres (six miles) south of the port city of Haifa.
Police and firefighters said it was not immediately clear what caused the fire, although they had not ruled out arson.
"We think that it might be an accident that started from one of the garbage points that was burning," fire service spokesman Yoram Levy told AFP.
A police spokesman said they were looking into the possibility of arson, although it was "too early to say" for certain.
President Shimon Peres issued a statement offering his condolences and said Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad had also extended his sympathies during a phone call.
"Fayyad conveyed to President Peres the condolences of the Palestinian people to the Israeli people over the tragedy," the statement said.
After a long, dry summer Israel is experiencing an unusually warm and dry autumn.
The Israel Meteorological Service listed the midday temperature in the Haifa area on Thursday as 31 degrees Celsius (87 Fahrenheit) with winds reaching 30 kilometres per hour (17 mph).
