"Social Network" named best film by key group
NEW YORK - Facebook film "The Social Network" picked up four awards, including best movie, from a key industry group in the first major honors of Hollywood's awards season, helping to narrow the list of this year's Oscar contenders. The National Board of Review, a U.S.-based group of movie industry watchers and film professionals, gave best director to "Social Network" maker David Fincher, and its best actor award went to Jesse Eisenberg, who portrays Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Aaron Sorkin won for adapted screenplay.
Aretha Franklin says surgery "highly successful"
DETROIT - Soul singer Aretha Franklin underwent a "highly successful" surgery on Thursday for an undisclosed health problem, the "Queen of Soul" said in a statement released by her spokeswoman. In early November, Franklin, 68 and a multiple Grammy Award winner, canceled her concert and personal appearances until May 2011 on the orders of her doctors, No reason was given, and her representatives have declined to disclose her illness.
Disney's hairy princess could take box office crown
LOS ANGELES - "Tangled" could move up to the top spot at North American box office this weekend, after the animated take on the Rapunzel fable narrowly failed to unseat Harry Potter during last weekend's Thanksgiving-stretched session. "Tangled" enjoyed a five-day debut of almost $69 million, with $49 million of that coming Friday through Sunday. So even with half as much box office this weekend, that would be a $25 million haul for the Disney cartoon's second session.
Ryan Gosling fired from film after ice cream binge
LOS ANGELES - Ryan Gosling has revealed that he was fired from Peter Jackson's 2009 awards contender "The Lovely Bones" because his 60-pound weight gain did not sit well with the director and his fellow producers. Gosling said his much-ballyhooed weight gain -- fueled by drinking melted Haagen Dazs ice cream when he was thirsty -- was all a part of how he saw the character of Jack Salmon, the grieving-father role ultimately filled by Mark Wahlberg.
Drummer says Jim Morrison never exposed himself
LOS ANGELES - On December 9, the Florida Clemency Board, on the urging of outgoing Gov. Charlie Crist and in its last meeting of the year, will consider pardoning Doors frontman Jim Morrison. Morrison was convicted of indecent exposure after a 1969 concert at Dinner Key Auditorium in Miami. The singer died two years later; he would have turned 67 on Wednesday, December 8.
Ellen DeGeneres would be best holiday party guest: poll
NEW YORK - Americans would invite comedian Ellen DeGeneres to a holiday party, take a vacation with actor George Clooney and ask first lady Michelle Obama to decorate their Christmas tree, a survey released on Thursday suggests. The first lady got 38 percent of the vote among Americans asked who should decorate their home for the holidays, followed by former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin with 22 percent, according to the study conducted for HomeGoods stores.
Ousted CBS weatherman: "It's a cruel business"
NEW YORK - Dave Price, the soon-to-be-ousted weatherman on CBS' "Early Show," called the network's decision this week to overhaul the third-place breakfastcast "jolting." While Price says he understands that TV news is very much a results-oriented business, he was nevertheless caught off guard when CBS News and Sports president Sean McManus informed him that a new "Early Show" team would be in place by January 3.
Angelina Jolie defends Bosnian directorial debut
PARIS - Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has hit back at criticism of her directorial debut, saying most people back her portrayal of a love story between a Serbian man and Bosnian woman on the eve of the 1992-95 Balkans conflict. Speaking in Paris ahead of next week's premiere of a very different film -- romantic action comedy "The Tourist" in which she stars with Johnny Depp -- Jolie said her intention had never been to stoke controversy with her movie set in wartime Bosnia.
Eminem and R&B singer Bruno Mars lead Grammy nominees
LOS ANGELES - Rapper Eminem, riding high on the comeback trail after spending several years battling drug addiction, led the field of Grammy contenders on Wednesday with 10 nominations. The 38-year-old hip-hop star will compete for the three big awards of album, song and record of the year, as well as in a host of rap categories.
Queen Elizabeth "shed tears" at Narnia film ending: Neeson
LONDON - It appears Her Majesty approves of the new Narnia film. Describing a poignant scene toward the end of the third film in the blockbuster series, "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader," actor Liam Neeson said he became emotional during its royal world premiere earlier this week.
