Barry Diller steps down as IAC CEO, buys out Malone

NEW YORK - Barry Diller is stepping down as chief executive of IAC/InterActiveCorp, the company said, adding it had bought out one of its largest shareholders, John Malone's Liberty Media Corp <LINTA.O>. IAC said on Thursday that Liberty had sold its entire equity stake in IAC, worth $368 million, in exchange for $220 million in cash and the Evite and Gifts.com businesses. The online businesses will become part of Liberty's Interactive unit.

Ebay buys local shopping website Milo

SAN FRANCISCO - EBay Inc <EBAY.O> has acquired shopping engine Milo.com, underscoring the growing allure of local services even as fellow Internet company Google <GOOG.O> ponders buying discount coupon site Groupon. Shares of eBay rose some 2.5 percent in afternoon Nasdaqtrading.

Google: satellite platform to aid forest efforts

CANCUN, Mexico - Google Inc <GOOG.O> unveiled technology on Thursday it says will help build trust between rich and poor countries on projects designed to protect the world's tropical forests. Measuring the success of forest-protection plans in places like the Amazon, Indonesia and the Congo basin has always been difficult because tree disease, corruption, and illegal logging threaten vast remote areas that scientists can't monitor by land.

Acer sees shortages as smartphone demand surprises

PARIS - A surge in demand for the latest smartphones has taken the industry by surprise and left it facing a shortage in the key end-of-year holiday sales season, a chief of Acer's <2353.TW> cellphone unit said. "The industry as a whole is struggling with supply. It is a bit of a scramble," Aymar de Lencquesaing told Reuters in an interview on Thursday.

RIM buys Swedish firm to improve screen design

TORONTO designs and has a long history of working with mobile and embedded technology," RIM's chief technology officer, David Yach, wrote on a company blog announcing the acquisition.

Clearwire plans to sell over $1.1 billion in debt

NEW YORK - Clearwire Corp <CLWR.O> plans to sell more than $1.1 billion in debt after months of negotiations to stave off a looming funding gap as it spends billions on building a new wireless network. But its shares fell 6.6 percent after the news as some investors worried about the cost of the debt, while others were disappointed the wireless service provider, majority owned by Sprint Nextel Corp <S.N>, had not been able to raise more.

FCC chief backs some rationing of Internet traffic

WASHINGTON - Internet service providers would be allowed to ration web traffic on their networks under a strategy unveiled by the top U.S. communications regulator that no longer focuses solely on open access. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski proposed banning the blocking of lawful traffic but allowing Internet providers to manage network congestion and charge consumers based on Internet usage.

DirecTV to add more than 200,000 U.S. subs in Q4

NEW YORK - DirecTV Group <DTV.O> expects to add significantly in excess of 200,000 net new subscribers in the United States in the current quarter, Chief Executive Mike White said on Thursday. The company is on course to have more than 19.1 million subscribers by year-end, closing in on Comcast Corp's <CMCSA.O> shrinking leadership in the U.S. pay-TV sector, White said at DirecTV's Investor Day.

Time Warner's Bewkes skeptical of Netflix plan

NEW YORK - Time Warner Inc <TWX.N> Chief Executive Jeffrey Bewkes questioned whether Netflix Inc's <NFLX.O> current business model of paying top dollar for rights to stream movies and TV shows over the Internet is sustainable in the long-term. Bewkes said for a subscription service to work it would have to pay premiums for the best content soon after it is released in theaters or broadcast on television or risk devaluing the programing.

Motorola eyes home streaming to mobile

NEW YORK - Motorola Mobility plans next year to sell a product that lets consumers stream video to mobile devices such as tablet computers and cellphones in their home, a top executive for the company said on Wednesday. The product, announced at the Reuters Global Media Summit, will be showcased at the Consumer Electronics show right after Motorola Inc <MOT.N> spins off Motorola Mobility, which includes its set-top box and cellphone business, from the rest of the company on January 4.
