Russia halts gas delivery to Ukraine: Gazprom
AFP - 2 hours 44 minutes ago
MOSCOW (AFP) - - Russia has halted its supply of natural gas to Ukraine, a Gazprom spokesman confirmed Thursday.
"Gas supplies have been cut in full from 10:00 am," a Gazprom spokesman told reporters.
Gazprom put the amount of gas it stopped piping to Ukraine at 90 million cubic metres per day.
However supply totalling 300 million cubic metres per day destined for customers further downstream in Europe was continuing unabated, the spokesman said.
Russia supplies around one-quarter of the gas consumed in the European Union, and accounts for more than 40 percent of the bloc's gas imports.
But both Ukraine and EU member states claim to have built up sufficient gas reserves to get them through the winter, minimising the immediate anticipated impact from a Russian supply cutoff to Ukraine.
Gazprom had steadily warned it would cut supply to Ukraine if debts for gas already shipped were not paid by Wednesday, along with a new deal on supply for 2009.
Russia and Ukraine announced late Wednesday that negotiations on a deal had broken down.
