In New Year message, Japan's PM looks to past for hope
AFP - 2 hours 21 minutes ago
TOKYO (AFP) - - Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso insisted in a New Year message Thursday that Japan could survive the current harsh economic climate just as the nation rose from the ashes of World War II.
In the online statement, he reiterated his resolve to make Japan the first major nation to emerge from the global economic meltdown.
"We are the ones who build the future," he added. "We must not be passive. We must act to open up the future that we desire."
Japan has much to worry about in the year ahead, with the economic crisis battering the Japanese economy and pushing household names such as Toyota and Sony to cut costs and slash jobs.
Aso himself also faces challenges with his approval ratings on the slide, and he faces pressure to call early elections.
However his New Year message looked to an internal conflict some 140 years ago that triggered Japan's industrialization, and to WWII.
"Looking back, the Japanese people have protected and changed the nation and prospered by making choices and with hard work," he said.
"Japan and the Japanese people should have more confidence. As we have done in the past, Japan can turn difficulty into opportunity," he added.
"I shall never flee. With you, I will steadily walk forward."
