Channel NewsAsia - 2 hours 29 minutes ago
Hong Kong director Wong Ka Wai receives yet another world acclamation. His movie "In the Mood for Love" has been selected as the Best Asian Movie in history by CNN.com. The movie about Old Shanghai is one of the six Chinese movies chosen as Asia's Best 18 movies in history.
According to reports, Asian countries produce 1000 films every year; this is double the number of movies produced by Hollywood annually. In fact, Asia is not just competitive in terms of quantity but also has a batch of influential directors with personal styles and rich movie genres.
Top of the list of Asia's Best Movies is Wong's "In the mood for love". Chinese director Jia Zhangke's "San Xia Hao Ren" (Still Life), which won 2006 Golden Lion at the 63rd Venice International Film Festival, is sixth in line. "Xi Zao" (Shower) by Chinese director Zhang Yang, is seventh. "Infernal Affairs", a movie by Andrew Lay about the Hong Kong underworld, is ranked tenth. Hu Jinquan's classic movie "Xiaonu" (A Touch of Zen) produced over forty years ago is the last Chinese movie on the list and is ranked number 15.
Chinese martial art films and Japanese horror movies are genres well acclaimed worldwide and viewed as Asian's most significant contributions to the world movie industry. Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" and Takashi Shimizu's "The Grudge" are viewed as outstanding works in these genres.
The other Asian movies on the list include "Mother India" (Mehboob Khan, India), "The Host" (Bong Joon-ho, South Korea), "Syndromes and a Century" (Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Thailand), "Whale Rider" (Niki Caro, New Zealand), "Shall we dansu" (Masayuki Suo, Japan), "The Ballad of Narayama" (Shohei Imamura, Japan), "Mandala" (Kwon-taek Im, Korea), "When the Tenth Month Comes" (Dang Nhat Minh, Vietnam), "Himala" (Ishmael Bernal, Philippines), "Ikiru" (Akira Kurosawa, Japan), "Utu" (Geoff Murphy, New Zealand) and "Gabbeh" (Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Iran).
