ShareThis June 4, 2010 2:27 p.m. EST Topics: environmental cleanup, disaster and accident, environmental issue, environmental pollution, structural failures, industrial accident, United States Linda Young - AHN News Writer Pensacola, FL, United States (AHN) - There have been reports of tar balls and tar cakes--believed to be from the Deep Horizon oil spill disaster--washing up onto beaches in Northwest Florida's Panhandle region. Coast Guard, National Parks Service and state Department of Environmental Protection officials are investigating reports that tar balls washed up at Gulf Islands National Seashore on Pensacola Beach Friday morning. Oil from the Gulf disaster has been floating toward Florida and it had been expected to come ashore sometime this weekend. Florida's pristine beaches and seafood account for much of the state's economy. Losses from the oil spill could run into the tens of billions of dollars annually and devastate the state's already recession-battered economy. Analysts fear that oil losses could put Florida into an economic tailspin and send unemployment soaring again. Cleanup teams in hazmat suits are at work on an 18-mile long area of beach coastline in Escambia County near the border with Alabama. Analysts have differed on how much oil is being discharged. However, everyone can agree that the BP Deep Horizon disaster has been spewing an unknown amount of oil into the Gulf of Mexico since April 20, despite efforts to plug the leak, or at least to slow it down. Workers continue to try to skim oil before it reaches shore. Along with fears that the oil will pollute the beaches and destroy tourism, there are fears on what the oil will do to shore birds, other animals and sea life. With much of the nation's seafood coming from Gulf Coast fishing areas and many areas now closed to fishing, the one sure thing is that seafood will become scarcer and prices for consumers will climb, further stressing the wallets of recession-battered Americans.
