JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The Israeli navy intercepted and was shadowing another ship bound for blockaded Gaza carrying aid and activists on Saturday, five days after the bloody seizure of a Turkish ship triggered an international outcry.
World
The stand-off in the Mediterranean came as Washington, Israel's key ally, said its blockade of the Hamas-run Gaza Strip was "unsustainable and must be changed" -- the clearest sign yet of a shake-up in the embargo that has blighted the lives of 1.5 million Palestinians for the past four years.
Turkey, once Israel's main Muslim ally, has kept up its fury over the deaths of 9 mostly Turkish men on Monday. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan harangued Israel on Friday about ignoring the Biblical commandment "Thou shalt not kill."
Turkish autopsy results, as reported by a British newspaper, found 30 bullets in the activists who died. They included an American.
A spokeswoman for the Free Gaza group backing the latest ship, the Rachel Corrie, and a journalist aboard the vessel quoted by Al Jazeera, said warships appeared to have been following the Irish-owned freighter since around dawn.
An Israeli military spokeswoman said the aid ship had ignored two separate radio transmissions and had not responded to the navy's calls to divert to Israel's Ashdod port -- it was unclear whether the navy would now take action to force it.
Part of the radio message said: "This is the Israeli Navy. You are approaching an area of hostilities which is under a naval blockade ... The Israeli government ... invites you to enter the Ashdod port. Delivery of the supplies in accordance with the authorities' regulations will be done via the formal land crossings and under your observation."
The activists have said they are determine to sail to Gaza.
The journalist quoted by al Jazeera shortly after 6 a.m. (0300 GMT) said: "We can see some Israeli ships a little away from us. They are following us. There has been no contact."
Activists' contact with the ship was patchy, spokeswoman Greta Berlin said, adding at around 6 a.m. that it had been some 55 km (35 miles) west of Gaza.
Israel has said it would not let the ship through to its intended destination in Gaza.
"UNSUSTAINABLE"
Israel says its blockade of the Gaza Strip, tightened after Islamist Hamas seized the enclave from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction in 2007, aims to keep out arms.
In Washington, the White House said Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip was unsustainable but urged the Gaza aid vessel to divert to an Israeli port to reduce the risk of violence.
"We are working urgently with Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and other international partners to develop new procedures for delivering more goods and assistance to Gaza," Mike Hammer, spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said on Friday.
"The current arrangements are unsustainable and must be changed. For now, we call on all parties to join us in encouraging responsible decisions by all sides to avoid any unnecessary confrontations," Hammer said in a statement.
The Irish-owned Rachel Corrie is a converted merchant vessel bought by pro-Palestinian activists and named after an American woman killed by an Israeli bulldozer in the Gaza Strip in 2003.
In Dublin, Irish Foreign Minister Micheal Martin said in a statement: "Those on board the Rachel Corrie have indicated that they are ready to accept inspection of their cargo at sea, prior to docking in Gaza."
GUNSHOTS AT CLOSE RANGE
Autopsy results on the nine dead Turkish activists from Monday's raid showed they had been shot a total of 30 times, many at close range, Britain's Guardian newspaper reported on Saturday. Five were killed by gunshots to the head, it said.
Turkish-American activist Fulkan Dogan was shot five times from less than 45 cm (18 inches) away, in the face, the back of the head, twice in the leg and once in the back, the paper said. In addition to those killed, 48 others received gunshot wounds and six activists were still missing.
In his angriest rhetoric yet, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan accused the Jewish state on Friday of violating its own biblical commandments.
"I am speaking to them in their own language. The sixth commandment says 'thou shalt not kill'. Did you not understand?" Erdogan said in a televised speech to party supporters.
"I'll say again. I say in English 'you shall not kill'. Did you still not understand?. So I'll say to you in your own language. I say in Hebrew 'Lo Tirtzakh'."
Turkey, Israel's only Muslim ally, has threatened to rethink its entire relationship. Thousands of protesters sang Turkey's praises at demonstrations in Egypt and Lebanon on Friday.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a forum of senior ministers on Friday to discuss the arrival of the Rachel Corrie and actions to be taken following the international criticism Israel faced after Monday's events.

Gee, where’s all the jew propaganda Lurkers? The Middle Eastern countries are not our enemy. They only attack us because we arm & support israel through $3 billion annual welfare payments. Israel then drops cluster bombs (US supplied)on civilians, commits international piracy, etc, & lies as usual. As long as American govt.criminals try keeping the status quo. Americans will be attacked. Set the jews adrift, & let their neighbors take care of them. They’ve more than asked for it for decades.

this is a game of how far can you push and how often before either side gets real angry and a small war starts giving a reason for other interested parties a chance to step in with out being the provocateur. Then all hell will break lose.
America on the other hand is getting to spread out and depleted will appear powerless to keep our treaties. That could lead to disaster.

I can see both sides in this, but how the story is covered, kind of pisses me off.
It says above, in relation to the killings earlier this week “…including a Turkish ship on which 9 men were killed by Israeli commandos who stormed aboard.”
Reading this, one can picture Israeli commandos marauding the ship, guns blazing, which all video evidence shows to be untrue.
The IDF could’ve easily protected their soldiers, by coming onboard guns blazing, but didn’t do so. What ever happened to objective Journalism, you know, the *5 Ws?* Choice of words is essential when reporting news facts. And it’s *news* stories written like this that can inflame already high tensions.

Autopsy’s in Turkey on the 9 dead peace protesters brought there indicated 5 were executed by single shots to the head, one was a mere 2 centimeters between the machine gun muzzle to the skull of the victim.
One of the survivors stated hundreds of Israeli sailors attempted a zodiac assault raft attack to board the vessels which failed.
The Israeli’s then fired hundreds of paint balls with glass shards inside of them which produced horrific soft flesh wounds.
Then the Israeli Commando’s used helicopters to rappel down on the ships in the darkness, they were carrying M4 machine guns with a M203 Grenade launcher which they used to rake the decks and people with lethal 5.56mm rifle rounds.
Estimates are some 50 were wounded, 10 killed, 5 of the dead died from a single shot to the head, an American citizen was shot in the head and multiple places on his body as well among the dead.
Another American was shot in the face by a Israeli Commando’s M4 Machine Gun using the M203 Grenade launcher to fire a tear gas canister right into his face. He lost his eye, but not his life.

The main reason for the movement is to deliver the humanitarian aid and to break the siege of Gaza. Everybody knows how brutal the Zionist regime will be when you against them and the movement are doing just fine. Provocation? You might say so but kudos to the heros. After all, provocation is the Zionist way of life. The world will see the real picture of the Zionist. Either you join them or go against them. But if you against them, be prepared to get destroyed and face the consequences
The fact is, Israel wont let the Gazans survive. That’s the reason why they cant rebuild their homes for example although the Zionist claimed they opened the door for humanitarian aids to Gaza. If they let those aids to be in Gaza, the people over there wont be living like what they are now. Mind to tell you that Egypt are just coward as what they are. They want to keep their safe guard with Zionist and the regime might accuse the Egypt for supporting the Hamas if they open the door in Rafah.
You cant win the war by traditional way with Israel. Lets see how Israel gona deal with this. And I don’t believe in 2-state solution. Zionist are looking for 1 state with NO single Arab in it. Move out or join them (in 1 state) as 2nd class citizens
I have the ‘Zionist mind’ on my head
