ShareThis June 4, 2010 9:26 p.m. EST Topics: government, politics, public officials, primary, election, United States Kris Alingod - AHN News Contributor Carson City, NV, United States (AHN) - Two new polls have the Tea Party's candidate in the Senate race in Nevada leading Republican rivals less than a week before the primary. Surveys have former state lawmaker Sharron Angle as the top GOP contender, but also the weakest general election candidate against Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Angle leads a new Suffolk University poll with 33 percent support, trailed by former UNLV basketball star Danny Tarkanian with 26 percent and former state GOP chair Sue Lowden with 25 percent. Sixty-six percent of voters say they would not know who to vote for if the primary were held today, but Angle has also emerged as the top GOP contender in another survey. The Daily Kos/Research 2000 poll has Angle ahead with 34 percent, followed by Lowden with 25 percent. Tarkanian, a real estate executive, trails with 24 percent. The poll has Reid winning in general election match-ups against the three Republicans for the first time. He leads Angle, 43 percent to 37 percent, and Lowden, 42 percent to 38 percent. The Democrat is also slightly ahead of Tarkanian, 43 percent to 39 percent. The general election numbers confirm that while Angle is the frontrunner in the primary race, she would fare the worst against Reid and would not attract broad support from independents or undecided voters. Reid, 70, is seeking a fifth term in an election year dominated by anti-incumbent sentiment and political fallout from an acrimonious healthcare debate in which he figured prominently, having led passage of the legislation in the Senate. The former police officer is facing a crowded field of 13 challengers in the Republican primary. His lead comes as Lowden, once viewed as the presumptive Republican nominee, suffered declining poll numbers following her remarks that letting people barter for services could bring down healthcare costs. Lowden's "bring a chicken to the doctor" statement was widely panned and Democrats used it to launch a "Chickens for Checkups" website. The casino owner who once had a two-digit lead among GOP rivals as well as Reid dismissed the Suffolk University's survey. "As Jim Geraghty of National Review Online points out, the Suffolk poll was widely off the mark in last fall’s gubernatorial race in New Jersey," Lowden's campaign said in a statement, referring to the race in the Garden State that saw Republican Chris Christie winning against a sitting Democratic governor. Her "chicken" statements aside, Lowden is also facing anti-establishment sentiment among conservatives who last month chose a newcomer over Sen. Bob Bennett in the Republican state convention in Utah, and elected Rand Paul over Secretary of State Trey Grayson in Kentucky. In Nevada, the Tea Party is invoking similar sentiments by supporting Angle over a former state Republican party chair who has the backing of Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-AZ). Angle may be the clear conservative candidate in the race but the claim of Washington outsider seems to belong to Tarkanian, who has never held public office but ran in the 2004 state Senate race and the 2006 race for Secretary of State. The primaries in Nevada are next Tuesday. The race is rated "leans Republican" by the Congressional Quarterly.
