LONDON (Reuters) - Nine Turkish activists killed in an Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound aid ship were shot a total of 30 times and five died of gunshot wounds to the head, Britain's Guardian newspaper reported on Friday.
World
Autopsy results showed the men were hit mostly with 9mm bullets, many fired at close range, the Guardian said, quoting Yalcin Buyuk, vice-chairman of the Turkish council of forensic medicine which carried out the autopsies on Friday.
Israeli commandos stormed a flotilla of aid ships planning to break the Israeli sea blockade of Gaza on Monday. The deaths, which all took place on one ship, the Mavi Marmara, drew widespread condemnation.
Israel said the marines who rappelled onto the Mavi Marmara fired in self-defense after activists attacked them with clubs and knives as well as two pistols snatched from the commandos.
The autopsy results showed that a 60-year-old man, Ibrahim Bilgen, was shot four times in the temple, chest, hip and back, the Guardian said.
A 19-year-old, named as Fulkan Dogan, who also has U.S. citizenship, was shot five times from less than 45 cm (18 inches) away, in the face, the back of the head, twice in the leg and once in the back, it said.
Two other men were shot four times. Five of those killed were shot either in the back of the head or in the back, the Guardian quoted Buyuk as saying.
In addition to those killed, 48 others suffered gunshot wounds and six activists were still missing, he added.
Israel said the multiple gunshot wounds did not mean the shots were fired other than in self defense.
"The only situation when a soldier shot was when it was a clearly a life-threatening situation," the Guardian quoted a spokesman for the Israeli embassy in London as saying.
"Pulling the trigger quickly can result in a few bullets being in the same body, but does not change the fact they were in a life-threatening situation," the spokesman said.
The newspaper quoted Haluk Ince, chairman of the council of forensic medicine in Istanbul, as saying that in only one case was there a single bullet wound, to the forehead from a distant shot, while every other body showed multiple wounds.
He said all but one of the bullets retrieved from the bodies came from 9mm rounds. Of the other round, Ince said: "It was the first time we have seen this kind of material used in firearms. It was just a container including many types of pellets usually used in shotguns. It penetrated the head region in the temple and we found it intact in the brain."
No-one at Turkey's forensic laboratory could immediately be reached for comment.
Turkey, Israel's only Muslim ally, stepped up its rhetoric over the killings on Friday, accusing the Jewish state of betraying its own biblical law.

This article fails to mention that the videos showing the Gaza flotilla “peace activists” attempting to murder and lynch Israeli marines, who at first boarded the ship non-violently, is available on YouTube and elsewhere as clear evidence that verifies Israel’s claims. Why isn’t Reuters adding this very relevant piece of information to the article?

It would seem that these folks were shot while attacking the Israelis with their backs to them. Maybe they were using some sort of new Muslim martial arts. Or maybe they were on their knees and a gun was raised to the back of their heads and the trigger pulled. Except for the American. His wounds sound more like what the Mafia does to someone they don’t like. Five shots from less than 18 inches in the face, back of the head, two in the leg and one in the back. I doubt that occurred as a single salvo. Nine dead, 48 wounded and six missing, I call bullsh t on the “The only situation when a soldier shot was when it was a clearly a (sic) life-threatening situation”. That’s clearly why so many were shot in the back of the head. The strange shell adds evidence the reporters statement that two were killed before the boarding operation began. And therefore before the ship riders defended themselves.

Why doesn’t Israel show the film of what happened prior to the boarding operation began? I am sure they were filming then. It would also help their claims if film from other sources were shown. But for some reason those seem to have been stolen and not shown to the world. Come clean or accusations will find a home in willing hearts.

One person was shot while threatening the lives of the Israeli’s with a water hose. Evidently, the Israeli commandos are like the wicked witch of the west. Either that or they are so fragile that a stream of water is a deadly threat to them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cQ69oKFtVg

What kind of hyperbole is this headline. 9 people were hit with at total of 30 bullets, not shot 30 times. I begin to feel there is a not so hidden agenda. I looked at the video of the activists attacking and the viciousness makes it clear the activists murderous intent. As for the Turkish autopsy, who can believe a country that does not even acknowledge the mass murder of the Armenians — oh yes — thou shalt not kill. Turkey, what about shelling Kurdish villages full of civilians to try to establish a 10 mile buffer zone??? Anyone who see the video knows the soldiers were justified in using deadly force.

Everyone knows that the Palestinians are no saints. I am surprised that the international community is standing against Israel, I think the world is scared that if they dont nod to the wishes of the Moslems, they may face more terror attacks :)..such spineless international community..shame on you…As far as reuters are concerned, I wouldnt be surprised that the jouranalist who wrote this may be sponsored by the Arab world.

Well I am surprised that the Reuters have this policy of blocking user comments…this infringement of freedom of speech…do you have a publiched guideline as to what you will not publish? If not then you are no better than dictatorial newspapers and Reuters motives would be highly questionable…

Placement of the shots is pretty helpful when you are looking at a crime that involves one or two shooters. To say that because some wounds were in some places or at close range and then make an attempt to put “intent” behind it? Your detective skills suck.
When a man is being savagely beaten and has to pull a gun to defend himself? There is a good chance that someone next to him in a mob is going to get hit, too.
The other ships didn’t attack them and came out fine. This was not a hit.
