Indian Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna has accepted an invitation to visit Islamabad next month despite continued Indian concerns about Pakistan-based Islamic militants blamed for the deadly 2008 siege of Mumbai. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh "has always been saying that you tackle those who are responsible for the Mumbai attack and I'm willing to go more than half the way," Krishna told a news conference on a visit to Washington, on Friday. "Things have not exactly gone as per our estimates, but nonetheless we cannot give up. We will have to keep engaging Pakistan," he said. Pakistan's Supreme Court last week upheld the freedom of the founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba, a group blamed for the Mumbai attacks that left 166 people dead, rejecting a government appeal not to release him from house arrest. Krishna said his visit to Islamabad was meant to overcome a "trust deficit" between India and Pakistan, which have fought three full-fledged wars since their separation at birth in 1947. But Krishna said he shared India's concerns about Pakistan to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during a "strategic dialogue" on Thursday. "The message that I get from the US administration is that they are aware of our concerns and that they are not going to do anything which would adversely affect India's interests," Krishna said. The US Congress last year approved a five-year, 7.5 billion-dollar aid package for Pakistan to help the nuclear-armed nation build its economy and democratic institutions and to curb the appeal of Islamic extremists. New Delhi has been concerned that US resources -- particularly military equipment -- could be diverted and used against India rather than Taliban militants in Pakistan's lawless northwest. Krishna said that India has also spoken to the United States about China's plans to build two civilian nuclear reactors in Pakistan. Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao, India's top career diplomat, pointed to the attempted Times Square car bombing by a Pakistani-American allegedly trained by the Taliban as a sign of common challenges faced by New Delhi and Washington. "Our two countries, India and the United States, have a vital interest in defeating terrorism and ensuring that its safe havens and breeding grounds cease to exist," Rao told a forum. Relations between the United States and India have been rapidly warming over the past decade following mistrust during the Cold War. But some Indian policymakers remain concerned about the US focus on Pakistan and China. In a rare gesture, President Barack Obama went to the State Department on Thursday for a dialogue reception and announced he would visit India in November. William Burns, the US under secretary of state for political affairs, said that India and the United States had a unique opportunity as a wide range of leaders and the public in both countries supported greater cooperation. "If we get this moment right, Indians and Americans can have an enormously positive influence on each other's future and on the course of the new century," he said.
