Singapore’s architecture award enhances the Asian brand
Channel NewsAsia - 2 hours 9 minutes ago
SINGAPORE: There is increasing international interest in the Emergent Asian Architecture award given out by the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA).
This year, there were 13 nominations from seven Asian countries vying for the prestigious prize, compared to approximately half a dozen nominations the last time round.
Experts said this is a sign that the biennial award is becoming an established international platform for Asia’s outstanding architectural talents.
The winner of this year’s SIA—Getz Architecture Prize for Emergent Architecture in Asia is Japanese architect Hitoshi Abe, who also serves as the chair of the Architecture Department at the University of California in Los Angeles.
Judges were impressed by Dr Abe’s dual role of practitioner and educator. His ability to bring the Asian brand of architecture overseas also made him a cut above the rest.
On Singapore, Dr Abe said: "The city you have is well—designed and many of the buildings here are very refined. But it’s kind of difficult for me to find if there is any diversity within it."
Tai Lee Siang, president of the SIA, said: "I think Singapore’s architecture is still emerging on the whole. A lot of it is due to survival and a lot of it is due to fast—paced growth. But in terms of establishing our own brand of architecture, I think it still has a way to go."
Meanwhile, experts said developments like the integrated resorts indicate Singapore’s openness toward further developing and diversifying its architectural landscape.
