Dovish lawmaker Beilin to retire from politics
AP - Wednesday, October 29
JERUSALEM - An Israeli lawmaker who helped engineer the Oslo Peace Accords between Israel and the Palestinians says he's done with parliamentary politics.
Longtime dovish politician Yossi Beilin said Tuesday he would not seek another term in office when the country heads to elections in February.
Beilin has been a member of parliament since 1988. Early in his career, Beilin was a close associate of Labor party leader Shimon Peres. He later broke left and joined the Meretz party, which he headed as recently as earlier this year. He was a key architect of the Oslo accords that led to the Palestinian Authority.
Beilin spokeswoman Ronit Gal says he will remain active in peace efforts outside parliament. Beilin founded the Geneva Initiative, a group of Israelis and Palestinians who have drafted an unofficial peace deal.
