Iranian lawmaker slaps Ahmadinejad confidant
By ALI AKBAR DAREINI,Associated Press Writer AP - Thursday, October 30
TEHRAN, Iran - A conservative Iranian lawmaker slapped a confidant of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday, alleging the official was trying to pay legislators not to vote for the impeachment of the interior minister.
Mohammad Abbasi, director of the government's representative office at parliament, charged that his ear was injured when he was "attacked" by the lawmaker, the official IRNA news agency said.
IRNA said at the time Abbasi was seeking to persuade lawmakers not to vote against Interior Minister Ali Kordan, who is scheduled to face an impeachment hearing next week after admitting he falsely claimed to have an honorary degree from Britain's Oxford University.
"While I was deliberating with a number of lawmakers over the impeachment motion, this lawmaker attacked me and physically assaulted me," IRNA quoted Abbasi as saying.
Another lawmaker, Ali Riyaz, told The Associated Press that a fellow parliament member, Ali Asghar Zarei, slapped Abbasi's face. Riyaz declined to provide further comment.
Zarei told the semi-official Fars news agency only that he "confronted" Abbasi. He charged that Abbasi was gathering signatures of support for Kordan by offering lawmakers about $5,000 not to vote in favor of impeachment.
"Collecting this signature was against morality. I confronted him to prevent violations and wrongdoings that are contrary to the policy of the government," Fars quoted Zarei as saying.
Both conservative and moderate lawmakers have called on Kordan to resign or face a no-confidence vote in parliament and be dismissed from his Cabinet post, which is responsible for holding next June's presidential election.
