Fashion's Tom Ford lands a movie gig
AP - Thursday, October 30
NEW YORK - Tom Ford, who largely left the fashion world behind to try his hand in Hollywood, announced Wednesday his first deal to direct a film. "A Single Man," starring Colin Firth, Julianne Moore and Matthew Goode, is set to begin filming in Los Angeles on Monday.
The movie is set in 1962 and tells the story of how Firth's British college-professor character deals with losing his partner of 16 years.
Producers include Ford, Chris Weitz, Andrew Miano and Robert Salerno.
Ford left high-profile jobs at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent in 2004 with great fanfare, intent on bringing his knack for all things glitzy and provocative to the world of entertainment. He boasted three projects in the works and formed his own production company, Fade to Black, the next year.
Over time though, Ford found himself drawn back into fashion. First, there was a cosmetics partnership with Estee Lauder, then sunglasses, a high-end menswear brand, and now menswear stores in 20 cities.
But he didn't give up on movies. Ford lives part-time in Los Angeles and increasingly has become a red-carpet player with the likes of Tom Hanks and Daniel Craig wearing his tuxedos to major events. The designer's friendship with Craig also led Ford to designing James Bond's wardrobe for the upcoming "Quantum of Solace."
