ShareThis April 21, 2010 2:42 p.m. EST Topics: earnings, food, company information, economy, business and finance, consumer goods, United States Mitchell Jaworski - AHN News Reporter Oak Brook, IL, United States (AHN) - McDonald’s announced Wednesday that first quarter profit rose 11 percent as sales grew worldwide, driven by strong demand for the company’s breakfast dollar menu and new McCafe line-up. The fast-food giant said first quarter earnings totaled $1.09 billion or $1 a share, up from $979.5 million or 87 cents a share in the same period a year earlier. Revenue totaled $5.61 billion in the first quarter, up 10 percent from last year. Same-store sales were strong around the globe, rising 4.2 percent. The Asia/Pacific region was strongest with sales rising 5.7 percent. North American same-store sales were not as strong, adding 1.5 percent. The results topped analyst estimates for earnings of 96 cents a share on revenue of $5.53 billion, according to FactSet Research. "McDonald's compelling menu, unmatched convenience and unbeatable value generated another strong quarterly performance," said Chief Executive Officer Jim Skinner. "For the first quarter, we delivered comparable sales and guest count growth in each geographic segment along with global double-digit operating income growth. Improved operating margin also helped boost McDonald’s results, widening by 2.2 percent in the quarter to 29.8 percent. The increase was helped in part by lower commodity costs compared to a year ago. McDonald’s has about 32,000 restaurants around the globe, with roughly 6,500 of those being company owned.
