Fresh Greek debt woes send Asian markets down

HONG KONG (AFP) - – Asian investors mostly sold up on Thursday as Greece's cost of borrowing hit record highs, raising fresh fears about other European Union nations' financial stability.
As talks between Greece, the European Union, and IMF to discuss Athens' debt bailout got under way, the yen rose against the euro and dollar as dealers moved into less risky currencies, which in turn weighed on Japanese exporters.
Tokyo was 1.27 percent, or 140.96 points, off at 10,949.09 and Sydney fell 0.95 percent, or 46.9 points, to end at 4,907.4. Some traders also moved in to take profits from the previous two days' gains.
Under-fire Japanese car giant Toyota was also dealt a blow when ratings agency Moody's downgraded its credit rating, citing concerns over its "product quality."
Greece needs about 10 billion euros within the next few weeks and about 30 billion euros in total for the rest of the year to pay its bills and allow it to press ahead with massive budget cuts and structural reforms.
But the interest rate investors demand to hold Greek debt surged past 8.0 percent, well beyond levels Athens has said it can afford to pay.
The dollar fell to 92.84 yen in Tokyo morning trade from 93.17 in New York late Wednesday. The euro slipped to 1.3380 dollars from 1.3387 and to 124.23 yen from 124.76.
The yen has also been boosted by stocks' weakness across the region as dealers look for safer vehicles for their money.
"Investors are worried about Greece, as well as other European Union nations' financial problems," Nikko Cordial Securities analyst Tsuyoshi Kawata told Dow Jones Newswires.
And Barclays Capital analyst Yuki Sakasai said: "Markets have become more nervous about the negotiations... and the potential for contagion if these negotiations fall through."
The government announced Thursday that exports tumbled at a record 17.1 percent last year as global trade was stunted by the financial crisis.
However, Tokyo also said shipments rose for a fourth straight month in March as demand picked up in Asia for its cars, auto parts and microchips.
Moody's said its Toyota downgrade "reflects the ongoing low level of profitability evident at Toyota, and which we expect to continue for an extended period". It added that the car maker's outlook was "negative."
Toyota has been severely hit by the recall of around 10 million vehicles due to accelerator and brake defects that have been blamed for a number of deaths in the United States. The car maker ended down 1.5 percent Thursday.
Other exporters were hit on a stronger yen. Sony fell 1.8 percent, Sharp was off 1.4 percent and Canon dropped 1.5 percent. Nissan Motor slipped 2.0 percent.
Hong Kong and Shanghai were hit by concerns over moves by their governments to clamp down on property speculation, which is sending prices soaring on the mainland and in the southern city.
Hong Kong ended 0.26 percent, or 55.99 points, lower at 21.454.94 after Financial Secretary John Tsang said he may raise the transaction tax on homes valued at or below 20 million Hong Kong dollars (2.60 million US).
In February the city's government said it would raise stamp duty on homes valued at 20 million dollars or more.
Shanghai fell 1.11 percent, or 33.79 points, to end at 2,999.48.
Over the past week, the government has tightened restrictions on advance sales of new property developments, introduced curbs on loans for third home purchases, and raised the minimum down payment for second homes.
Singapore was flat.
Wall Street edged up just 0.07 percent despite upbeat corporate results, with aircraft maker Boeing posting a 15 percent loss in the first quarter, which was better than market expectations.
And investment bank Morgan Stanley said it made a 1.8-billion-dollar profit in the first quarter of 2010, reversing losses from a year ago.
Markets also had an eye on upcoming G20 talks in the United States, where a global tax on financial transactions and the Chinese yuan's peg to the dollar will likely be discussed.
Oil was mixed, with New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in June, down 21 cents at 83.47 dollars a barrel, while Brent North Sea crude for June was up seven cents to 85.77 dollars.
Gold closed at 1,148.50-1,149.50 US dollars an ounce in Hong Kong, up from Wednesday's close of 1,143.00-1,144.00 dollars.
