Privacy chiefs keep watch over Facebook
BRUSSELS - Over the past six years, social networking has been the Internet's stand-out phenomenon, linking up more than one billion people eager to exchange videos, pictures or last-minute birthday wishes. The sites, led by Facebook with more than 400 million users, rely in large part on people's willingness to share a wealth of personal information with an ever-expanding network of "friends," either ones they actually know and see from time to time, or those they have met virtually through the Internet.
Brazil tops world asking Google to remove content
SAN FRANCISCO - Brazil tops the list of countries asking Google Inc <GOOG.O> to remove content from its services, the Internet search company disclosed in a new Web tool -- but it said statistics on China are secret. The company said it was offering the summary of requests in order to shed more light on how and when it removes data, but government requests from China, where Google has ended its censorship of local search results, is a state secret that the company won't publish.
Fast-growing Facebook aims for more social Web
SAN FRANCISCO - Facebook's user base is growing at its fastest rate ever, the online social network company said on Wednesday as it rolled out features that link the company's platform more tightly with outside Web sites. Facebook's "open graph" would let people see information tailored to their lives and interests wherever they are on the Web, the company's chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said at the f8 conference in San Francisco.
Google in talks to buy ITA Software: report
- Google Inc <GOOG.O> is in talks to acquire airline IT and services provider ITA Software Inc, Bloomberg reported citing three people familiar with the matter. Cambridge, Massachusetts-based ITA Software may seek about $1 billion, two of the people told the news agency, adding that the talks may not lead to a transaction.
Apple results smash Street view, outlook strong
SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> results blew past Wall Street expectations on the back of record iPhone sales, and the company gave a strong revenue forecast, sending its shares up more than 5 percent to an all-time high. The results and forecast should boost Apple's stock price, which has charged upward for more than a year amid the hype surrounding the launch of the iPad tablet.
Yahoo revenue misses as search ad sales contract
SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> said large advertisers showed a renewed appetite for online display ads in the first quarter, but the Internet company's troubled search business put a damper on the company's comeback plan. Executives said the company was poised to regain lost ground in search but investors focused on slightly lower than expected first-quarter revenue and indications that current quarter revenue could again miss Wall Street estimates, sending shares down 3.5 percent in after hours trade.
Target to carry Kindle at stores in late April
SAN FRANCISCO - Target Corp <TGT.N> will begin selling Amazon.com Inc's <AMZN.O> Kindle e-reader this month, the first time Amazon is allowing distribution of its popular product outside its website. Amazon's dominant e-reader is fending off new competition from Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPad tablet and the Nook from Barnes & Noble Inc <BKS.N>. Both of those devices are already sold at Best Buy Co Inc <BBY.N> in addition to their own store chains.
Apple seeks return of lost iPhone prototype
SAN FRANCISCO - A wayward prototype of Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> next-generation iPhone has dominated the chatter in Silicon Valley over the past few days, and the company has moved to recover the device after it was apparently lost in a bar. The unreleased iPhone unit later resurfaced on Gizmodo, a popular gadget website, which promptly splashed photos and details of it all over the Web and touched off a storm of publicity and speculation in the technology blogosphere.
Ten countries urge privacy changes at Google
WASHINGTON - Data protection and privacy chiefs from 10 countries issued a joint letter pushing search engine giant Google <GOOG.O> to improve respect for data privacy, Canada's Office of the Privacy Commissioner said on Tuesday. The heads of data protection authorities in Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain and Britain issued a letter whose criticism focused on the botched roll-out of Google's Buzz.
Author Toibin sees novel surviving new technology
NEW YORK - Award-winning Irish writer Colm Toibin firmly believes the novel will remain fundamentally unchanged by the Internet or other high-tech innovations, a realm in which he admits he is nearly illiterate. Toibin, the author of such critically acclaimed novels as "Brooklyn," "The Master" and "The Blackwater Lightship," is set this week to appear on a panel to discuss "The Author in the Age of the Internet," part of the London Review of Books' 30th anniversary celebration events in New York.
