Afghan official: 9 Taliban killed in gunbattle
By NOOR KHAN,Associated Press Writer AP - 2 hours 24 minutes ago
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - A shootout between police and Taliban fighters in southern Afghanistan left nine militants dead and three police seriously wounded, a government official said Sunday.
The Taliban attacked a police checkpoint in Gereshk district Saturday, sparking a two-hour gunbattle, said Dawood Ahmadi, the provincial governor's spokesman. Six other Taliban were wounded in the clash, he said.
Police captured two of the wounded militants and were in pursuit of the other four, Ahmadi said.
Elsewhere Saturday, U.S.-led coalition forces killed three insurgents and captured four others in a clash outside the capital, the U.S. military said.
The troops were pursuing members of a group led by warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar when they came under fire in Kapisa province, the military said in a statement Sunday. The soldiers returned fire, killing the militants.
Two other people were killed Saturday when NATO's International Security Assistance Force clashed with insurgents in southern Helmand province. The force said in a statement its troops came under fire and had to call for air support when they were unable to get out of the area.
Six people were wounded in the fighting and treated at a nearby base, it said. The statement did not say if those who were killed and wounded were insurgents or civilians.
It said the incident was under investigation.
Also Saturday, five Afghan army troops died in two separate mine explosions, the Defense Ministry said. Four troops died when their vehicle hit a mine in Kunar province, while another was killed when his vehicle hit a mine in Helmand province, the ministry said in a statement.
