South Africa capture second Sevens victory
AFP - 2 hours 1 minute ago
GEORGE, South Africa (AFP) - - Hosts South Africa captured their second title of this season's IRB World Sevens Series when they beat New Zealand 12-7 in a thrilling final here on Saturday.
It was South Africa's first win on home soil and their second victory in the Cup competition after triumphing against England in the final in Dubai last weekend.
The victory was also the first time South Africa won back-to-back tournaments.
After trailing New Zealand 5-7 at the break, South Africa scored a late try through captain Mzwandile Stick to secure the win.
New Zealand were the stronger side in the opening half, but resolute South African defence restricted the All Blacks to just a single score, a converted try by DJ Forbes.
South Africa narrowed the gap to just two points by the interval after Renfred Dazel crossed in the corner.
They upped their game in the second period and thought they'd scored the winning try with just minutes remaining, but the assistant referee ruled Gio Aplon had knocked the ball on inside the in-goal area.
From the resulting scrum, South Africa won a tighthead after a New Zealand put-in, and the loose ball was snapped up by Stick who dived over from close range. He converted the try to give his side a five-point advantage.
South Africa advanced to the final after beating Fiji in the semifinals, while New Zealand got the better of Argentina.
"This win means a lot to us. We've lost here in the final before when the pressure's got to us, but we owed it to the fans," said Stick.
"The guys all worked extremely hard and fought till the last second. It's a very special victory for us."
Runners-up in Dubai, England, captured the Plate after beating tournament giant-killers Portugal 24-7 in their final.
England had to settle for the Plate after losing to hosts South Africa in the Cup quarter-finalsand then beat Samoa 20-19 in the Plate semifinals.
Portugal lost in the Cup quarters to Argentina, but beat the USA 24-7 in the Plate semi-finals.
In the Plate final, England scored through Isoa Damu early on, but Portugal hit back through Aderito Esteves to leave the contest at 7-7 at the interval.
England's greater experience, however, shone through in the second period and they added three further tries by Micky Young, Matt Turner and Kevin Barrett.
Portugal can look back on a very satisfactory tournament.
They qualified for the Cup quarterfinals for the first time after recording wins against Kenya, Samoa and Wales on day one.
Perennial under-achievers France and Australia contested the Bowl final, with the Europeans coming out on top.
France showed tremendous character after being reduced to six men for two minutes in the first half and while they conceded a try, they hit back with one of their own seconds later.
After leading 14-5 at the break, the French added a further try in the second period to run out 21-12 winners.
In the Shield final, crowd favourites Zimbabwe beat Scotland 26-0, with powerfully built wing Gerald Sibanda getting two tries.
