Australian navy catches suspected people smugglers
By ROD McGUIRK,Associated Press Writer AP - 2 hours 9 minutes ago
CANBERRA, Australia - Australia plans to increase surveillance of its northern waters to catch people smugglers after a boat carrying 47 people was intercepted off the coast Sunday, a minister said.
The boat with three crew and 44 passengers was intercepted by a navy warship in Australian waters off the northwest coast, Home Affairs Minister Bob Debus said in a statement.
It is the sixth boatload of suspected asylum seekers to enter Australian territorial waters in two months.
Most people who arrive in Australian waters this way are asylum seekers. But Debus said he did not yet know the nationalities of the latest arrivals nor whether they intended to apply for refugee visas.
Debus said an additional navy patrol boat and surveillance plane will be deployed to Australia's north because people smuggling is becoming more prevalent. The additions will bring the border protection force to 13 aircraft and 17 patrol boats.
"People smugglers are taking advantage of good seasonal conditions and the extra border patrols will be kept in place to cover this period of (increased) activity," Debus said.
The latest arrivals will be taken to an immigration detention camp on Christmas Island, a remote Australian territory in the Indian Ocean.
In July, the government eased some of Australia's mandatory detention policies for asylum seekers but retained the practice for refugees who could pose a security threat. Children can no longer be detained, and all asylum seekers are given access to lawyers at the government's expense to help them appeal decisions against their refugee claims.
