Spy writer Le Carre honored by Swiss university
AFP - 2 hours 15 minutes ago
GENEVA (AFP) - - British spy novelist John Le Carre received an honorary doctorate at his former Berne University Saturday, the establishment in the Swiss capital said.
David John Moore Cornwall, 77, better known under his pseudonym John Le Carre, studied German literature at Berne University from 1948 to 1949 before becoming a British secret agent based in the German cities of Bonn and Hamburg.
"Apart from spying, I have in my time sold bathtowels, got divorced, washed elephants, run away from school, decimated a flock of Welsh sheep with a 25-pound shell because I was too stupid to understand the gunnery officer's instructions (and) taught children in a special school," Cornwall said on his official website.
The author of "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold" and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" has seen his books translated into 36 languages.
