Spain marks 30 years of post-Franco constitution
AFP - Sunday, December 7
MADRID(AFP) - - Spain marked Saturday the 30th anniversary of its constitution under which the country returned to democracy after 40 years of dictatorship.
King Juan Carlos, in an address in parliament, said the country had made great advances thanks to the constitution but was still threatened by "the barbary of terrorism," in a reference to the armed Basque separatist organisation ETA.
He singled out the fatal shooting Wednesday of a Basque industrialist, Ignacio Uria, which was blamed on ETA.
The ceremony in parliament was attended by Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, members of the opposition and representatives of Spain's institutions.
Asked by journalists about the possibility of constitutional reform, Zapatero said it was not a priority for the government.
In his previous term Zapatero's government had considered amendments covering such aspects as the succession to the throne, autonomous regions and the European constitution.
But in agreement with the opposition it was decided to postpone the changes.
The current constitution was approved by 87 percent in a referendum on December 6, 1978 in the wake of the death of dictator Francisco Franco who had ruled Spain since toppling the previous republican government in the 1936-9 civil war.
