Promoters plan for more music festivals despite economic gloom
Channel NewsAsia - 2 hours 37 minutes ago
SINGAPORE: There are plans to organise more music festivals in the region and Singapore’s premier music festival, SINGfest, is also set to get bigger and better.
It cost nearly US$5 million to stage the two—day SINGfest this year which brought some of the world’s best music acts to Singapore.
When the festival returns next year as a three—day event, the cost will go up by another 60 per cent. But fans can expect more artistes and different genres of music.
Michael Hosking, founder, Midas Promotions, said: "Rock going down here... R&B down on one stage and we’d have Hip Hop on another stage and so on and so forth."
After next year’s festival, organisers of the event said they would be looking for bigger venues for future SINGfest and one of them is Singapore’s resort island of Sentosa.
Promoters are also looking at creating more music festivals in the region next year, tapping on artists who are performing at SINGfest.
So far, there are plans to create festivals in Thailand and Hong Kong in the second half of 2009, with an estimated cost of close to US$8 million.
Macky Drese, managing partner, All The Worlds, UK, said: "When you look at certain Western countries, they’ve got multiple festivals happening in a single weekend. So, looking at some countries where there’s not even one music festival — a significant music festival — we feel there’s an opportunity to be had."
About 15 per cent of the 17,000 people who attended this year’s SINGfest were from overseas.
By investing more into pan—regional marketing, promoters hope to bring more tourists to festivals in the region, with the firm belief that consumers will never give up on music even if the economy is singing the blues.
