Thousands file past Russian Orthodox patriarch's coffin
AFP - 59 minutes ago
MOSCOW (AFP) - - Russians queued in their thousands on Sunday to pay their respects at the coffin of first post-Soviet Orthodox patriarch Alexy II, Russian media reported.
Over 10,000 people had filed past Alexy's open coffin since the start of his lying in state on Saturday evening, ITAR-TASS news agency quoted police as saying.
President Dmitry Medvedev issued an instruction cancelling all entertainment events and broadcasts on the day of the funeral on Tuesday, the Kremlin said.
Earlier the Church appointed an interim leader, Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, who is considered a relatively reformist figure in the deeply conservative Russian Orthodox Church.
A formal decision on the succession is to be taken within six months.
Alexy died on Friday aged 79.
