Twitter's Stone says no ads in 2009
LOS ANGELES - Twitter has no plans to put advertisements on the popular microblogging site this year, co-founder Biz Stone said on Tuesday, amid a growing push for the 2-year-old Internet sensation to begin making money. Stone, who said Twitter was "pretty good right now" with regards to funding, stressed the company's immediate focus was on building out features ranging from an improved search functions to paid-for commercial accounts.
Yahoo to kick off new branding campaign
SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> said it would kick off a $100 million branding campaign next week as the No. 2 U.S. Web company seeks to revive growth and redefine itself under Chief Executive Carol Bartz. The global campaign, "It's You," comes a few months after Yahoo said it would outsource its search technology to Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O>.
RIM's updated BlackBerry could brighten outlook
TORONTO - Research In Motion <RIM.TO><RIMM.O> is expected to forecast strong gains for its current quarter on Thursday as it gets set to update its BlackBerry smartphones for consumers and business users. As the recession eases, the company is already benefiting from reinvigorated growth in the market for phones that are capable of surfing the Web and sending email, analysts say.
Intel CEO says looks beyond PCs as market matures
SAN FRANCISCO - Intel Corp rolled out a software developers' platform on Tuesday and stressed it will step up efforts to boost revenue from consumer electronics and other markets beyond its core, maturing personal computer business. Chief Executive Paul Otellini expects personal computer sales volume this year to "likely" at least match 2008's, underscoring growing expectations that consumer spending is driving a mild recovery for the depressed market.
Microsoft developing new tablet PC device-report
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> is developing a small tablet-style PC to rival a similar product that may be launched by Apple Inc <AAPL.O>, technology blog Gizmodo reported on Tuesday. The booklet-shaped device, called Courier, is in the "late prototype" stage of development, Gizmodo reported, without identifying the source of its information.
With a fresh focus on design, laptops come of age
SAN FRANCISCO - Say goodbye to the "black brick" laptop. The era of the plain, dowdy PC is officially over. As computer makers roll out their new notebooks and netbooks ahead of the end-year holiday shopping season, razor-thin, sleek and colorful are most definitely in, as are arresting designs in an ever-expanding array of choices.
EU court adviser backs Google on Net ads
LUXEMBOURG - An adviser to the European Union's top court backed Google in a row with luxury goods maker LVMH over Internet advertising, saying the Web search firm had not infringed trade mark rights. The case centers on whether Google has the right to sell brand names for Internet search advertising -- a money-spinner for the group.
Proposed FCC Web rule change draws wireless ire
WASHINGTON/NEW YORK - U.S. phone companies may be forced to open their wireless networks to rival Internet services like Skype and Google Voice under a proposal brought out by the top telecom regulator to safeguard so-called Internet neutrality. The proposal, if adopted, would be a victory for consumer advocates and big Internet companies like Google Inc <GOOG.O> at the expense of telecom operators like AT&T Inc <T.N>, Verizon Communications <VZ.N> and Sprint Nextel Corp <S.N>.
Dell to buy Perot Systems for $3.9 billion
NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO - Dell Inc <DELL.O> plans to buy Perot Systems Corp <PER.N> for about $3.9 billion, paying a steep 67.5 percent premium to expand its technology services business and compete with Hewlett-Packard Co <HPQ.N> and IBM <IBM.N>. Perot Systems, a computer services provider founded in 1988 by former U.S. presidential candidate Ross Perot, would be the largest ever acquisition by Dell and comes after extended speculation about its M&A strategy.
Starbucks, Dell to aid online effort to save rainforest
NEW YORK - Environmental activists are taking to the Internet in a new bid to help save the world's rainforests with the help of major corporations including Starbucks Corp <SBUX.O> and Dell Inc <DELL.O>. Campaigners plan to announce on Monday the formation of "Team Earth," a social network that includes businesses, nongovernmental organizations, students and politicians with the hope of battling tropical deforestation.
