Reuters - Wednesday, September 23 Send IM Story Print (For full coverage of Pakistan, click on [ID:nAFPAK] Sept 23 - Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari will meet his country's backers, including U.S. President Barack Obama, at a "Friends of Pakistan" meeting in New York on Thursday. Zardari rose to power after his wife, former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, was assassinated in late 2007. He faces a range of problems from Islamist militancy to the economy and political rivalry as he begins his second year in power. Here are some questions and answers on Zardari's prospects. HOW IS ZARDARI'S GOVERNMENT HANDLING SECURITY? Like his late wife, Zardari is a staunch opponent of Islamist militancy. Early this year, fears were spreading for nuclear-armed Pakistan's stability as militants pushed closer to Islamabad. Alarmed by the aggression, the public and army have for the first time shown commitment to fighting the Islamists. Security forces have cleared most Taliban from their bastion in Swat and in a major blow to the militants, Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud was killed in a U.S. missile strike. Officials say the militants are in disarray. Their attacks appear to have tapered off in recent weeks although the Taliban and their al Qaeda allies still pose a major threat, as shown by a suicide bomber who killed 33 people in the northwest on Friday. The United States, struggling in Afghanistan, is bound to step up pressure for attacks on Afghan Taliban groups in border enclaves. General Stanley McChrystal, the commander of U.S and NATO forces in Afghanistan, said in an assessment leaked to the media the Afghan insurgency is supported from Pakistan and Afghanistan needed Pakistani action against those groups. HOW BAD IS THE ECONOMY? Zardari inherited a stumbling economy which went into virtual free-fall after he took over because of surging fuel and commodity prices and as militant violence and political wrangling unnerved investors. An International Monetary Fund package of $7.6 billion in November stopped the rot and with the help of lower fuel prices, the economy has shown signs of stabilising. But it remains vulnerable. Revenue collection is slack while security-related spending has increased and analysts say a budget deficit target of 4.9 percent of gross domestic product looks optimistic. Exports are weak and manufacturing, in particular the textile sector, is plagued by power cuts. Rising prices of staples is inflaming public anger. Pakistan wants allies to come through with $5.7 billion in aid pledged in April, including $1.5 billion a year in U.S. aid for five years. Zardari's main political rival is former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who heads the second biggest party and who has seen his popularity surge. Zardari, dogged by accusations of corruption during his wife's two terms in power, which he says were politically motivated, has struggled to win public support. Their parties will go head-to-head in the next general election, due by 2013. Sharif's party accuses Zardari of stalling on promises to rescind sweeping presidential powers incorporated in the constitution by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf. Sharif could mobilise his support to push for that. Zardari's party and its allies hold a majority in parliament which can block any attempt to unseat him. WILL THE ARMY INTERVENE? There are no apparent signs of friction between Zardari and the military, which has ruled for more than half Pakistan's 62 years of independence, and which is led by a commander who has vowed to stay out of politics. The army is wary of seizing power but that cannot be ruled out in the event of a crisis. WHAT OTHER RISKS FOR ZARDARI? Zardari wants better ties with India and relations have shown signs of improving after a sharp deterioration when Pakistan-based militants attacked the Indian city of Mumbai in November. Another big militant attack in India would ramp up tension between the nuclear-armed rivals.
