Duration: 00:41 TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AFP) - – Honduran soldiers surrounded Tuesday the Brazilian embassy where deposed president Manuel Zelaya is holed up to avoid arrest, after using tear gas to drive away thousands of his supporters. Soldiers in face-masks wielded truncheons as they broke up a demonstration by around 4,000 Zelaya supporters who had camped out overnight to protect the man they see as the rightful leader of their country. Four protesters were shot and injured in the skirmishes, Juan Barahona, coordinator of the Resistance Front Against the June 28 Coup, told AFP. Zelaya made a surprise return to Honduras Monday, three months after being ousted in a military-backed coup, prompting a tense stand-off in Tegucigalpa that coincided with world leaders gathering for the UN General Assembly. In New York, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called for Zelaya to be restored as president and appealed for calm, while Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva described Honduras as "in a state of siege." The de facto government imposed a curfew and closed the Central American country's airports as it sought to head off pro-Zelaya protests. Roberto Micheletti, the interim leader, has showed no signs of yielding, lashing out against pressure from the US and other governments for a negotiated resolution to the crisis and demanding that Brazil either give Zelaya refugee status or hand him over. "He has been lying to the whole world and particularly Hondurans," Micheletti told Colombian radio Tuesday. Zelaya lost his presidential power after violating the constitution through his controversial bid to change it, which provoked the crisis, Micheletti added. Lula reiterated Brazil's complete support for Zelaya and said he had spoken to him earlier Monday, urging him to "be very careful not to allow any pretext for the coup plotters to resort to violence." Zelaya appeared Monday on the Brazilian embassy balcony in his trademark cowboy hat and issued a rallying cry to supporters. "Nobody is going to grab me sleeping again, and my position is fatherland, restoration or death. They thought they were going to stop me at the border, but here I am alive and kicking." He said he had traveled for 15 hours through mountains, taking back roads to avoid military roadblocks, but declined to give details of those who had helped him return to the capital. He told AFP Tuesday that he had spoken with police and soldiers the day before to "seek a way out of the crisis," accusing his rivals of trying to further isolate Honduras and preventing access to international negotiators. "Fighting for democracy shouldn't be a crime. I think we have to seek to come together directly in order to achieve peace," he said to AFP inside the embassy. In New York, Clinton called for calm and reiterated US backing for Zelaya to be reinstalled. "Now that President Zelaya is back it would be opportune to restore him to his position under appropriate circumstances, get on with the election that is currently scheduled for November, have a peaceful transition of presidential authority and get Honduras back to constitutional and democratic order," she told reporters Monday. Clinton met ahead of the UN General Assembly in New York with Costa Rican President Oscar Arias, a Nobel peace laureate who brokered failed peace talks between the Zelaya camp and the interim government. Micheletti lashed out at Clinton and Arias in remarks that raised fears the military might be asked to storm the embassy. "Let's hope for Dona Hillary's and Mr Arias's sake, after the pleasure they took in president Zelaya's arrival here, that there will not be consequences to regret," he said. Brazil's foreign ministry said the embassy in Tegucigalpa had sought US help after its electricity, phone and water services were cut off. The embassy was using an electrical generator for now, but Brasilia had asked Washington to help provide extra diesel fuel, the ministry said. Democratically elected Zelaya, a rancher, veered to the left after he took office and alienated some by aligning himself with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Micheletti has said he will step aside after presidential elections on November 29. Zelaya is constitutionally barred from standing for a second term.
