In a meeting on the margins of the U.N. General Assembly, Obama told Hu that his administration regards the nuclear threats posed by both Iran and North Korea as critical dangers to the security of the United States, a senior American official said. Obama's requests come as the two countries are embroiled in a trade dispute that began just days before Tuesday's meeting when the U.S. slapped punitive tariffs on all Chinese-made tire imports. That move infuriated China, which has threatened retaliatory measures. Neither leader made any direct mention of the flare up. Each offered the other diplomatic assurances on improving ties in brief comments before their meeting, during which Iran and North Korea were discussed at length, according to the senior U.S. official. Obama stressed to Hu the "the centrality of the Iran nuclear issue to U.S national security interests" and urged China to cooperate with efforts to convince the country to come clean on its atomic program, which the U.S. and some of its allies say is aimed at developing nuclear arms. Senior diplomats from the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council _ Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States _ along with Germany are to meet with Iran's chief nuclear negotiator on Oct. 1 in Geneva to discuss Iranian compliance with the demands to halt suspect activity in exchange for a package of incentives. Should Iran not accept, the U.S. and its European allies want to impose harsh new sanctions on Iran, something that Russia and China have balked at in the past and continue to oppose. "We are going to need to coordinate very closely with the Chinese, no matter what track we're on" with Iran, the senior U.S. official said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a private diplomatic exchange. Iran has repeatedly denied that it wants to develop nuclear weapons and has protested efforts to get it to stop enriching uranium, a process that can lead to the production of material for a bomb. In contrast, North Korea has openly boasted of its nuclear weapons program. Obama asked Hu to show the similar cooperation on Iran as it has with efforts to persuade North Korea to return to stalled nuclear disarmament talks, the senior official said. Obama said it was key for the U.S. and China to have "demonstrable solidarity" on the matter "because absent solidarity, that would provide openings for bad behavior on the part of the North Koreans," the official told reporters. U.S. officials have said they would be willing to engage in direct talks with North Korea to get the disarmament talks started again. But they suggested on Monday they wanted to see more groundwork laid by China before Obama would agree to it. China is North Korea's main friend and benefactor. Successive U.S. administrations have asked Beijing to use its influence to rein in Pyongyang's nuclear ambition. The official would not discuss Hu's responses to Obama, but said that the Chinese remained concern about the tire issue. He said Obama noted differences between the U.S. and China on the matter but stressed that the administration is firmly committed to free trade. "I'm committed to pursuing a genuinely cooperative and comprehensive relationship with China," Obama told Hu ahead of the meeting. "We need to make our relationship more dynamic and effective." For his part, Hu said: "The Chinese side is willing to work with the United States to keep our bilateral relationship firmly along the right course."
