Rain hampers Malaysian landslide rescue
AP - 1 hour 2 minutes ago
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Heavy rain hampered the search Monday for a Sri Lankan maid missing after a landslide on the outskirts of Malaysia's largest city killed four people and destroyed dozens of homes, media reports said.
At least 15 people were injured in Saturday's pre-dawn landslide in the Bukit Antarabangsa hillside estate outside Kuala Lumpur.
Rescuers looking for the maid were forced to go slowly as persistent rain since late Sunday made the area unstable and raised the risk of more landslides, Selangor state police chief Khalid Abu Bakar was quoted as saying by national Bernama news agency.
Several landslides have caused damage in and around Kuala Lumpur in recent years. They are usually blamed on rapid development, deforestation and poor maintenance of drainage systems.
Opposition leader Lim Kit Siang called Monday for an independent inquiry into the latest landslide and said various government authorities had shown "sheer criminal negligence" in approving dangerous hillside developments.
The government has promised to ban new hillside developments while other local authorities vowed to review continuing hillside projects to prevent similar disasters.
The missing Sri Lankan woman is believed to be the employee of N. Yogeswari, 40, a veterinarian who was one of three people confirmed killed in the landslide, Khalid said.
Malaysia's Star newspaper quoted Khalid as saying on its Web site that some 3,000 residents in the area had been evacuated and that police were guarding the area to prevent looting.
