2 Filipino robbery suspects killed in shootout
AP - 2 hours 59 minutes ago
MANILA, Philippines - Two robbery suspects who escaped a weekend shootout with police that left 16 people dead in the crime-ridden Philippine capital were fatally shot after a car chase early Monday, officials said.
The suspects fired on police vehicles following their car in Caloocan city, a Manila suburb, triggering a gunfight that killed both men, said metropolitan Manila police chief Leopoldo Bataoil.
The victims were allegedly members of a notorious well-armed robbery gang blamed for Saturday's carnage in another Manila suburb, where the suspected criminals started firing at police and passers-by after sensing they were being tailed.
Authorities said they had received a tip the group was planning to rob a warehouse and deployed dozens of officers. The gunmen were armed with M-16 rifles fitted with grenade launchers, police said.
Among those killed were 12 suspects and a police officer. Three people nearby, including a man and his 7-year-old daughter who were in their car passing through the area also died.
Police said three to five gunmen were able to escape in a car they commandeered.
Bataoil said the assailants were believed to be members of a violent gang that has posed as police officers, adding that two of the slain gunmen were found wearing police-style bulletproof vests.
The group has been blamed for killing a bank teller and two armored truck guards picking up money from a bank on the University of the Philippines campus last month.
