Results due in key Indian state elections
AFP - Monday, December 8
NEW DELHI (AFP) - - Counting was underway Monday in Indian state polls seen as a key political indicator, with general elections just months away and voters stung by the attacks in Mumbai and an economic downturn.
Preliminary projections by Indian news channels showed the ruling Congress party doing better than expected, even though its economic credentials have been hit by the slowdown in growth and punishing inflation.
The party's record on national security was also in the spotlight following the Islamic militant attacks in Mumbai , which left 172 dead, including nine gunmen, and exposed India's intelligence failings.
News channels said Congress was on track to retain power in the capital area New Delhi, and could wrest power in the northern desert state of Rajasthan from its main rival, the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The BJP appeared set to retain its hold over the central states of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, while the outcome of a vote in the remote northeastern state of Mizoram was not yet clear.
Voting in the five states has been held over the past month, although the votes in New Delhi and Rajasthan took place in the wake of the Mumbai attacks.
Final results are expected later Monday.
