Sri Lanka seizes bunkers outside rebel capital
AP - 1 hour 11 minutes ago
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - Sri Lankan troops captured two Tamil Tiger rebel bunkers and destroyed another as they inched closer to the guerrilla's de facto capital of Kilinochchi in the country's north, the Defense Ministry said Monday.
Government soldiers attacked the bunkers Sunday after spotting them on the outskirts of the rebel stronghold, the ministry said in a statement. The attack was met with fierce resistance, but the rebels eventually retreated after suffering heavy casualties, it said.
The ministry did not release casualty details.
Rebels could not be contacted for comment because communication lines to the rebel territory have been severed.
Elsewhere, troops continued their push along the northeastern coast toward the rebel-held town of Mullaitivu, the ministry said.
Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi have been the center of rebel activity for the past decade.
Government troops have moved deep into rebel territory and captured a number of key bases and towns but are still locked in heavy battles at the edge of Kilinochchi.
Authorities have vowed to crush the rebels and end their 25-year separatist campaign for an independent state for ethnic minority Tamils.
More than 70,000 people have been killed in the violence.
